Overview

“Fundamental Critical Care Support” is a two-day course intended to teach nonintensivists the basics of assessment and management of acutely ill patients. This course consists of a didactic portion completed online prior to the hands-on, in-person portion of the training. The complexity of the critical care environment demands a minimum level of knowledge, skills and attitude to manage the care of critically ill patients. This effective program incorporates didactic on-demand components and in-person simulation scenarios to assess competence and teach evidence-based practice while maintaining patient safety and quality care. This FCCS course offers noncritical care physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses and paramedics — providers not formally trained in critical care — a systemic approach to initial management of acutely ill patients.

Objectives

At the conclusion of the activity, participants will be able to:

    • prioritize assessment needs for critically ill and injured patients
    • select appropriate diagnostic tests
    • identify and respond to significant changes in unstable patients
    • recognize and initiate management of acute life-threatening conditions
    • determine the need for expert consultation and/or patient transfer
