Fundamental Critical Care Support Courses

Emergencies occur in every community, and patients will at some point require critically complex care regardless of geographic location or proximity to specialized services.

This was made most evident by the COVID-19 pandemic when hospitals were holding high acuity patients for longer periods of time, which served as a valuable lesson learned. To help hospital clinicians in lower acuity ICUs provide safe, evidence-based care for the severely injured or ill, the Missouri Hospital Association is pleased to offer a series of complimentary training courses in various locations throughout the state.

These in-person courses are designed from the Society of Critical Care Medicine’s Fundamental Critical Care Support series to strengthen the knowledge and comfort level of front-line nonintensivist clinicians when treating higher acuity patients for extended time frames in EDs or other hospital areas. Specialized patient populations that will be addressed in this series include adults, pediatrics, obstetrical patients and post-operative care.

Fundamental Critical Care Support

Fundamental Critical Care Support is a two-day course intended to teach nonintensivists the basics of assessment and management of acutely ill patients. This course consists of a didactic portion completed online prior to the hands-on, in-person portion of the training. The complexity of the critical care environment demands a minimum level of knowledge, skills and attitude to manage the care of critically ill patients. This effective program incorporates didactic ondemand components and in person simulation scenarios to assess competence and teach evidence-based practice while maintaining patient safety and quality care. This FCCS course offers noncritical care physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses and paramedics providers not formally trained in critical care a systemic approach to initial management of the acutely ill patients.

Fundamental Critical Care Support: Obstetrics

Fundamental Critical Care Support: Obstetrics is a two-day course that covers physiologic changes during pregnancy, specific obstetric medical conditions and appropriate treatment, maternal cardiovascular resuscitation, and airway management of critically ill pregnant patients, as well as appropriate steps in fetal assessment, delivery and neonatal management. The course is formatted as a series of presentations and skill stations to provide knowledge, guidance for decision making, and limited practice in some clinical procedures and scenarios.

The course addresses fundamental management principles for the first 24 hours of post-resuscitation management of the critically ill pediatric patient or until transfer or appropriate critical care consultation can be arranged.
