Current market forces and trends are dramatically shaping the Future of Health. As the needle moves from health to care to wellness to meet the needs of the educated patient, the roles of nonhealthcare players in shaping the future will be highlighted. Medicine and the Muse: The Power of Storytelling on Mental Health
Storytelling often is thought to be the domain of the arts, not the sciences, but Laurel Braitman — New York Times bestselling author and Stanford professor — says storytelling has huge benefits for everyone. She’s seen firsthand how anxious and isolated students become healthier and more resilient through the power of communication, building up communities and connections through the simple yet radical act of telling their own stories. Learning better storytelling and communication skills will enable us all to harness our creativity, make meaning in our work and find beauty in difficulty.
In the session, Braitman encourages participants to reflect and write as a way to heal themselves so they can heal others. With practical strategies, firsthand experience and genuine care for her audience, she equips us with the tools we need to face any challenge, overcome difficulties and envision a better future.

Beyond High Reliability: What Your Organization Must Do Now To Maintain Excellence
It has been more than 20 years since the epic publications of The Quality Chasm and To Err is Human. Before those landmark articles, quality was assumed in our hospitals and with our providers. During the next 20 years, health care systems have gone through several phases of development. We now have a plethora of quality indicators, and multiple methodologies have been developed and implemented. Accrediting organizations and payers have placed huge demands on the health care system to acquire and submit data.
Despite pay-for-performance and data transparency, did we make progress? The bottom line is that life expectancy in the U.S. has declined. A recent study shows that medical errors are the third-leading cause of death — behind cancer and heart disease. Indicators may have improved, but has QUALITY improved? And how does patient experience tie to quality?
Dr. Berkowitz will discuss the four phases of quality improvement in the last 20 years and will offer national best practices that must be implemented to stay ahead of the curve and truly deliver, in an era of transparency, the quality of care that we strive for as health care providers. Quality efforts must strive toward health equity and improve outcomes for all.

Help Wanted: What You Must Do (And Never Do Again) To Find & Keep Devoted Employees
The employee revolution is here. As workers everywhere quit, retire or change jobs, do you really understand what leads ordinary people to become dedicated employees? Grounded in social science research, Joe Mull uses his trademark humor and energy to define the new rules you must embrace to attract talent and spark commitment. Along the way, Mull will outline why pool tables, massages and espresso machines never mattered; why those saying, “People just don’t want to work anymore!” will be the first to fail; and why trying to find the best person for the job is a broken strategy. You’ll leave with a clear blueprint for easily attracting the very best talent for years to come.
