100 Years

The stories of our past shape what and who we are today.
They also set the stage for our future.
At MHA’s 100th Annual Convention, we’ll reflect on how a century of progress — and our stewardship of that history — provides a springboard for the coming chapters of our story.
Throughout our 100th year, MHA has been featuring difference-makers within your organizations — individuals emblematic of our hospitals’ values. They demonstrate our collective commitment to touching lives while improving both health and care. These Exceptional People-Extraordinary Stories will be shared throughout the convention.
Together, we’ll celebrate our 100-year effort to make hospitals stronger. We’ll focus on the people and values that brought us to today, and those who will take us through the next 100 years and beyond.
We hope you will join us.

In the Eye of the Storm — Leadership Lessons from Hurricane Harvey
Dr. Alan Vierling spent five days in his hospital surrounded by six feet of water when Hurricane Harvey hit Houston. Before, during and after, there were innumerable lessons learned about dealing with an unexpected crisis. As the only safety net hospital in Northeast Houston, Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital was figuratively and literally an island during the storm.
In addition to the challenge of supporting a full hospital of patients during the hurricane, the leadership at LBJ had to contend with more than 180 evacuees who unexpectedly showed up. Morale, fatigue, rampant rumors and dealing with your caregivers as victims were common challenges. Attend to hear lessons learned during this crisis, and how you can successfully apply those lessons to your everyday mission.

Reimagining Health Care — The Forces Driving Tomorrow’s Clinical Innovation
Bringing about transformational change in patient care is not a simple task. However, it is a requirement for health care organizations striving to move forward and succeed in a value-driven health care system. Establishing a culture of clinical innovation and transformational leadership is a necessary step to achieve sustained, reliable, systemwide improvements in patient care. Models and techniques to support health care organizations in efforts to pursue fundamental system redesign and achieve dramatic improvements in clinical quality will be examined.
Using best practices of Evidence-Based Leadership SM(EBL), participants will gain practical insight into their own leadership capacity. Inspired and effective clinical leaders bring about changes that result in improved patient outcomes, greater professional satisfaction and enhanced performance of health care organizations.

Challenge of Change
Drawing from personal experience, Joe Theismann knows how to deal with the Challenge of Change. On Nov. 18, 1985, he was on top of his game — a two-time Pro Bowl player and the most productive quarterback in the history of the Washington Redskins. Later that evening, he found himself in a hospital bed with a compound fracture to his leg, shattering both his career and his boyhood dream. At age 35, he was faced with starting over in his personal life and professional career. In this stirring presentation, individuals and organizations learn how to tackle change by keeping a positive mental outlook and committing to a vision that guides them to the top.

Cross-cultural competency is a “must-have” skill as we define what it means to care for the ever-changing U.S. population. Successfully Leading Change in Health Care Organizations
The health care environment is constantly changing, and provider organizations must adapt to survive and thrive. Organizations frequently are asked to respond to legislative changes, market fluctuations, safety concerns, and patient or staff demands. The success of major change implementation hinges on how it is communicated, and how it impacts individuals and processes in the organization. Stakeholders frequently resist change for many reasons, including not having enough information, fear of how the change will affect them, comfort with the status quo and not understanding the benefits of the change. For change to truly be effective, a leader must know how to effectively communicate the benefits, minimize the barriers and describe the processes. Learn from your peers as they share approaches that were successful and those that impeded the change process.
