Join Us
Together, we are stronger.
St. Louis has a long history as a meeting point. The nation’s two greatest rivers merge into one just north of the riverfront. Countless journeys in all compass directions have been launched from this great city.
One of the most important aspects of the confluence of these mighty waterways is the strength they accumulate by joining. Care delivery is similar. It isn’t the product of individual heroic acts; it is the cumulative work of countless team members with the patient at the center.
The best health care is interconnected. It builds on the upstream influence of prevention, wellness and access, feeding in greater strength as it builds toward the deep and wide expertise of our hospital-based care environment.
This year’s convention will be framed by its venue — St. Louis Union Station. Attendees will be reminded of the importance of journeys to reshape our perspective — spurring curiosity, providing moments of awe and helping us understand. The convention should help our members feel that we are fellow travelers pursuing essential missions and bring to mind how our experiences enhance our ability to strengthen and heal individuals and communities.
An excellent lineup of convention speakers will help us understand the value of teamwork, how external factors — policy and politics, health disparities and change — shape our environment, and how our role in understanding and then navigating those factors can help us improve lives. Focused “Industry Insights” sessions featuring relevant health care-specific hot topics will ensure the best ideas and valuable networking opportunities are delivered to attendees.
It is an honor to bring MHA’s members this year’s program.
We hope to see you there!

Thank you to our generous education partners for supporting MHA’s 101st Annual Convention, along with the ongoing education and development of Missouri health care leaders.

The Current Political Moment
This is hardly the first time American politics have been bitterly divided, but it’s the first time it’s been bitterly divided in this way. Fundamental changes in economic opportunity are coinciding with accelerating shifts in the nation’s demography and culture — one party embraces those shifts, the other resists them. With insight, humor and rich personal stories, John Harwood draws on decades of work for the most prestigious outlets within the media landscape to describe the unpredictable electoral outlook that this collision of forces has produced.

Enhancing the Health of Our Communities
Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, many industries began to recognize that social and economic factors impact 80% of health outcomes. COVID exacerbated many of these issues, tremendously impacting the American workforce. This has led to the continued acknowledgment that these social and economic drivers are key to health inequities that have occurred in our country over many generations. While a lot of attention often is placed on what organizations are doing wrong, there are clear strategies from different sectors, that can be leveraged to address these disparities. In this engaging session, Dr. Alisahah Jackson will share the ways that social drivers impact health equity, identify various strategies to address health disparities, and focus on how community engagement can serve as an accelerator for health justice. This session is sure to make some uncomfortable, but ultimately will inspire and motivate you to, as Arthur Ashe said, “Start where you are, use what you have and do what you can.”

John Harwood
Award-Winning Political Journalist and White House Correspondent
For more than three decades, John Harwood has covered The White House, Congress, national politics and the economy for America’s most prestigious news organizations. He has interviewed every president from George H.W. Bush to Joe Biden, and he received an Emmy nomination for his hour-long live CNBC town hall with former President Barack Obama.
Steeped in public affairs since childhood when his father was among the nation’s top journalists of the last half of the 20th century, he graduated from Duke University with degrees in history and economics. He spent a year as a Nieman Fellow at Harvard.
For The Wall Street Journal, Harwood covered the first Bush White House, former President Bill Clinton’s agenda in Congress and four presidential campaigns. He was part of the Journal’s team covering the 9/11 attacks on New York and Washington, which won the Pulitzer Prize. For The New York Times and CNBC, he chronicled the financial crisis and Great Recession, including the first 2009 television interview of Obama as he prepared to enter the presidency that January. He moderated Republican presidential debates during the 2012 and 2016 campaigns.
For CNN, Harwood covered the tumultuous final year of Donald Trump’s presidency and his 2020 election battle with Biden. He subsequently tracked the new chief executive’s attempt to fashion and navigate a post-Trump era. No one is better equipped to interpret and explain the ups and downs of American elections, and the intersection of politics and the economy. At this turbulent moment, a lifetime’s experience gives him a unique perspective on the challenges facing journalism and its role in our democracy.

Smith retired from baseball in 1996 after playing 19 years in the major leagues, the first four years with the San Diego Padres and the final 15 with the St. Louis Cardinals. - all-time assist leader at shortstop with 8,375 assists
- all-time leader at turning double plays with 1,590
- 13 consecutive Rawlings Gold Glove Awards, signifying the best at his position

- 1992 St. Louis Man of the Year, a prestigious civic award never before given to an athlete
- 1986 Father of the Year Honors Group Award
- 1983 NAACP Image Award for Sportsmanship, Humanitarianism and Community Involvement

Locally, he serves as President of PGA REACH Gateway, an organization that reaches out to inner-city youth and our military via mentoring and golf programs.
Smith currently is the host of Cardinals Insider, a weekly news magazine television show airing in multiple markets throughout the Cardinal territory. Since retirement from baseball, Smith succeeded Mel Allen as host of This Week in Baseball; was the color analyst for Cardinal broadcasts from 1997 to 1999; and served as the baseball analyst for CNNSI, a joint venture between CNN and Sports Illustrated from 1999 to 2002.
