Hospitals are at the center of efforts to build strong, healthy and resilient communities.

To support these activities, MHA provides resources to assist hospitals through community health needs assessments, emergency preparedness, patient and worker safety, and community and population health activities.

Our regulatory, quality improvement, legal and emergency preparedness staff are coordinating to find, build and deliver information, guidance and resources to support hospitals’ efforts on and off campus. Through these efforts, we’re working to develop safer care environments and resilient communities.

Active Shooter Planning and Response Guide

The Healthcare and Public Health Sector Coordinating Council developed a guide for health care organizations to prepare for active shooter emergencies. Active collaboration with local law enforcement — including planning for exercises, on-site communication and sweeps, reentry following an incident, etc. — is described in detail.

A discussion paper is available from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Forum on Medical and Public Health Preparedness for Catastrophic Disasters that examines issues and potential best practices during responses to terrorist shootings, bombings and similar mass casualty events.

Hospital Lessons Learned in Civil Unrest

A webinar, conducted by several impacted hospitals within the St. Louis metropolitan area, focuses on lessons learned from a hospital perspective as it relates to civil unrest events.

In addition to hospital and system-specific presentations, this offering includes a panel presentation reviewing the critical elements and lessons learned identified by presenters. Several supporting documents also are available for review.
