The CDC issued a health advisory on the growing measles outbreak in the U.S. As of March 6, a total of 222 measles cases have been reported by twelve U.S. jurisdictions, with the largest of the outbreaks occurring in Texas and New Mexico at 201 cases.  Currently, the hospitalization rate for this outbreak is 17%. More cases are expected as this outbreak continues to expand rapidly.

With spring and summer travel season approaching in the U.S., the CDC emphasizes the important role that clinicians and public health officials play in preventing the spread of measles.

This advisory is important for many clinicians who have not seen or diagnosed this disease. Recommendations on management for hospitals and clinicians is provided in the health advisory and on the CDC’s Clinical Overview of Measles webpage.

Patient Safety Awareness Week, an annual recognition event that typically occurs during the second week in March, serves as a reminder that patient safety should be the No. 1 priority in health care.

“The week is intended to raise awareness about identifying processes that could lead to preventable harm and celebrating the efforts already made, including by those who work quietly behind the scenes with the patient always in mind,” said MHA Director of Quality and Patient Safety Karie Untiedt, R.N., MSN.
