HHS Broadens Authority For Pharmacists To Administer COVID-19 Vaccine

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced a new authorization for pharmacists who meet specific training and other conditions to administer COVID-19 vaccines to patients ages three or older. A training course of at least 20 hours must be completed. HHS previously extended this pharmacist authority to COVID-19 vaccination of pediatric patients ages three through 18 years.

CDC Holds Testing And Treating Seasonal Influenza Call

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will hold a Clinical Outreach and Communication Activity call at 1 p.m. CDT Thursday, Sept. 17, to discuss the testing and treatment of seasonal influenza. An overview of the CDC’s recommendations for health care providers regarding influenza diagnostics and the use of antiviral medications for the 2020-2021 influenza season, including considerations during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, will be provided.

AHA Publishes Summary Of New COVID-19 Reporting Guidance

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services recently issued new surveyor guidance for COVID-19 laboratory test result reporting for Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments-certified laboratories. Laboratories are expected to be in compliance with the new requirements no later than Wednesday, Sept. 23. After that date, laboratories not in compliance will be subject to civil monetary penalties. CMS also released new enforcement regulations for long-term care facility COVID-19 reporting requirements. The American Hospital Association published a Special Bulletin with additional information.

NIH Awards Contracts For COVID-19 Rapid Point-Of-Care Tests

As part of its Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics initiative, the National Institutes of Health awarded $129.3 million in contracts to nine companies for technologies that include portable point-of-care tests for immediate results and high-throughput laboratories that can return results within 24 hours. Among the tests are some that use RT-PCR to give results in 15 minutes and strips that can be read without specialized equipment, similar to pregnancy tests. In addition, NIH said it is adding five additional laboratories to expand the network of coverage and potentially manage tens of thousands of additional tests daily.
