Nathan Baughman, Putnam County Memorial Hospital

Nathan does it all! He covers the clinic and the ER while on duty. He is extremely intelligent. He goes above and beyond to answer questions so patients and families can understand what is going on. It’s a small town hospital, so everyone knows the excellent care he gives. They will call and see if he will come in the ER and take care of their family members. If he is available, he will make every effort to do so.

Madison Blyth, Liberty Hospital

Madison is an exceptional nurse! She comes to work every single day to make it happen, no matter what comes her way. Not one complaint, always stays positive and works very hard. There is barely a month that goes by that I do not have a patient mention Madison by name in the hospital scorecard reviews. She is making our hospital have the premier face of patient care. Some patient comments include her working with them to understand what the patient needs and put the patient first to create an environment of care and compassion. She is certainly a Champion of Care in the eyes of Cardiology Services at Liberty Hospital.

Labea Butler, MU Health Care

During the pandemic, Labea served as operations manager of COVID-19 outreach, working tirelessly during MU Health Care’s mass vaccination events in the winter-spring 2021 at Faurot Field and assisted with the de-escalation planning to offer vaccinations in clinics.  She was a key member of the COVID-19 and Seasonal Flu Vaccination Committee and led collaboration efforts with Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services in 2021, hosting community outreach/vaccination events to increase COVID-19 vaccination uptake in underserved communities. Between December 2020 and June 2021, MU Health Care provided more than 80,000 COVID-19 vaccinations.

During 2022, Labea assisted with a series of COVID-19 and flu shot drive-thru events at MU Health Care clinics that provided more than 5,000 vaccinations. In addition, she collaborated with the health department and Columbia Public Schools to host COVID-19 booster and flu vaccine clinics on four Saturdays in the fall of 2022 that provided an additional 373 COVID-19 boosters and 186 flu vaccinations. Labea also took time out of her busy schedule to educate the public through media. In February 2021, she appeared on KMIZ-TV with other community experts to answer questions about the COVID-19 vaccine rollout. Labea’s contributions to MU Health Care and public health have been significant and worth of recognition.

Tabitha Carter, MU Health Care

A Daisy nomination from a grateful family member of a patient that was cared for at MU Health Care. “My father-in-law had a massive stroke, which left him brain dead. We spent six days in an ICU room. Our hearts and spirits were broken. Not only did Tabitha truly treat our father as family, she treated us as family. She laughed with us, cried with us, reassured us no matter what decision we made – it was the right one. She made sure our father was comfortable every second she was there. She made us feel so comfortable… she truly made a bad situation – better. She is the reason we have good memories of the last days with our dad. I don’t look back and hate that week, it was filled with love – due to her! I will forever tell everyone about her! She is beyond amazing at her job! She must have been made to be a nurse!” Nurses have the honor to make a positive impact in some of the most vulnerable times in the lives of our patients and their families, Tabitha exemplifies nursing excellence.

Sarah Choe, Kindred Hospital Northland

Sarah came to Kindred as a new grad and has blossomed into such a compassionate, smart and hardworking nurse. Sarah comes to work every day with a smile and goes out of her way to offer help to everyone she works with. Sarah has such an infectious smile, she is such a positive leader for the nurses she works with. She has been assigned several of our termination of life support patients, and the care that she provides patients and families at the end of their life is extraordinary. We have had several patients’ families come to us to recognize Sarah for making them feel more at peace with their loved one’s passing. The extra care and compassion that Sarah shows for her patients makes such a huge impact on their overall experience and outcome. Sarah exemplifies what a nurse should be: compassionate, caring and driven. Everything Sarah does is for her patients’ best interest, and we could not be more happy that she chooses to be a part of our team!

Brian Cline, Children’s Mercy Hospital

Brian has been a pediatric RN for over 25 years, working in specialty areas of neonatal intensive care and vascular access. He excels as a vascular access specialist through his skill in inserting PIVs, lab draws, midlines, arterial lines and PICC lines in pediatric patients. He is truly exceptional in his ability to obtain good vascular access in the most challenging cases like the 550 g premature infants. Not only is he able to care for the most challenging and vulnerable patients through exceptional skill, he also does this with kindness and compassion for the patients and families by always ensuring patients have adequate comfort and support during these difficult procedures. He is exemplary to the staff he works with by constantly improving his knowledge, enhancing his skills, precepting new employees and working in collaboration with multiple disciplines. He is an exceptional RN.

Sarah Gonzalez, Excelsior Springs Hospital

Sarah goes above and beyond staff. She is very knowledgeable in her role and is the go-to person for the hospital when questions arise. She works very closely with her staff and peers to make sure that patient satisfaction is at its highest. She stays up-to-date on the latest trends and topics of health care. She goes out of her way to make new leaders feel welcomed to the facility and the team. I am honored to work with Sarah!

Jill Kelly Hahn, Shriners Children’s St. Louis

Jill Hahn, RN, is a care coordinator for the Lower Limb Deficiency Program at Shriners Children’s in St. Louis. Jill has been a driving force of patient advocacy at Shriners for many years. Her role ensures that children from all over the world receive exceptional care from the moment they reach out to Shriners, through their interventions and throughout their entire recovery — which at times can take years. She advocates for the entire family to ensure that the patients — many of whom experience many socioeconomic disparities — get every option available to them so that they may reach their full potential. She works tirelessly with the surgeons at Shriners to make the care process as seamless and as efficient as possible. She works with medical and nursing students to share her knowledge and skills. She is an advocate, she exemplifies care and she is a champion for children with limb discrepancies from all over the globe.

Marina Jacobs, Barnes-Jewish Hospital

Marina is never short on compassion for the patients we work on together. She really puts every ounce of knowledge, ability and integrity into her service to others. Our patients of Dr. Massad brag, constantly, about how wonderful Marina is and how appreciative they are that they have her as their RN while they ensure treatment. She really does define the phrase “going above and beyond.” We would be lost without her.

Kim Lenhardt, Christian Hospital

Although Kim’s interactions with patients are brief, she makes a lasting impact. As a member of the palliative team, I have had multiple patients receive treatments in IR and they remember her. They also remember the fear they experience going down for a procedure where they are told they will not be put to sleep. Each patient I have had smiles and shares fond memories of the comfort that Kim has brought them when they were fearful. The patients understand that the procedures are necessary, but that doesn’t make it any easier. A smile, someone making them laugh and making them feel comforted — that makes it easier. That’s what Kim brings to the team and am I proud to say I know that nurse when I follow up with the patients post-procedure. Thank you, Kim, for all that you do.

Shannon Morris, Barnes-Jewish Hospital

Shannon is a nurse that patients and families dream of! Shannon has a passion for nursing and treats each and every patient with such great care. When Shannon accepted the interim ANM position, we jokingly said that she would NEVER be in the office, and we were right! Shannon enjoys helping her unit and making sure they are set up for success. She is ALWAYS smiling and laughing, which is contagious to everyone around her. If there is ever a nurse that I will forever sing their success and praises, it will be Shannon! She exemplifies the BJH standard of nursing and leads with her heart to provide the utmost care for every patient she encounters.

Erin Morrow, MU Health Care

Erin goes above and beyond by always being there for her patients whenever needed. Even outside of work, she will meet up with patients just to make sure they are okay. She went to Disney World around the time one of her previous patients was going, and she made it a point to go out of her way to spend time with him. She has the kindest heart and a work ethic like no other.

Riley Page, Cox Medical Center South

Riley has stepped up in her role to impact the Cox South Hospital at CoxHealth. She serves on our Final Salute for Veterans committee and plays a key role in honoring our veterans at Cox South. Riley has also played a huge role with our No One Dies Alone program at Cox South, as well. This program is truly impactful for our patients that are in their last phase of life who have no family or friends near them. Riley truly lives out the vision of CoxHealth, which is to be the “Best For Those Who Need Us.” Riley also has the utmost respect from her team and is truly a servant leader.

William Rhinesmith, Christian Hospital Northeast

Bill has always been such a delight to work with. I have worked in adjoining departments with him from 2010-2013 and then in the same department from 2015 to the present. He always has a cheerful disposition and brings the most joy to our department, both to staff and to the patients. He is always the first to try to make light of hard situations. The rapport that he carries with his patients is always a delight to see and hear him interact with his patients. He is always encouraging and works on keeping his coworkers smiling. We have all fallen in love with his joy in participating in the National Calendar Days and bringing in treats or different objects that go with that national day. We know we will be getting rubber duckies to take home on National Rubber Ducky Day. He always tells people that I am the nurse he wants to be when he grows up (if he ever grows up), but it is truly the opposite in that I hope that I will be the kind of nurse that he is!

Stephanie Shane, St. Louis Children’s Hospital

From the time Stephanie was 5 years old, she had two dreams. One was to be a mommy, and the other was to be a “baby nurse.” Needless to say, she’d been preparing her whole life for the life she’s living right now!
 She is the mother of seven beautiful children and has been a pediatric, NICU and ECMO nurse at St. Louis Children’s Hospital for the past 15 years.

Her humanity is extraordinary. She’s not afraid to step right in and hold space for those who are grieving, as well as celebrate the miracles achieved. Every patient is her kiddo, and every family member is her friend. She walks into a room and assesses ALL of the needs — whether it is keeping them alive or washing their hair because they said they feel gross.
 She can sense what is needed, and she fills that need. That is why she STILL maintains friendships with some of those families, even after 15 years. 
Being a “baby nurse” is not just a job for Stephanie. It’s not even a career.
 It’s her calling.
 And she answered.

Heather Simunich, BJC HealthCare

Heather goes above and beyond for her patients and her staff. No matter what, her patients come first. I have seen her work very hard to make sure all patients are taken care of by the end of her shift. Heather is someone who got into health care specifically to help people and it shows. I am proud to work with Heather.

Victoria “Tori” Smith, North Kansas City Hospital

An influential team player, Tori Smith, BSN, RN, PCCN, works to elevate nurses’ knowledge of evidence-based practices and research as chair of NKCH’s Research and Innovation Council. She is also active on the Steering and Unit-Based councils.

“Tori is a phenomenal leader,” said Director of Staffing Operations Sarah Jackson, RN, MS. “She is resourceful and jumps in when needed but still allows others to do their jobs. She always stays calm, even on our toughest days.”

Known for proactive patient care, Tori received the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses in January. She takes pride in knowing the condition and diagnosis of each patient on her floor when serving as a charge nurse.

“Tori has a passion for nursing research,” said Clinical Excellence Senior Director Ashley Peacock, MSN, RN. “She was the lead investigator on three nurse-led studies, with two published in peer-reviewed journals. Her use of EBP and research shows in the exemplary care she provides.”

Jeanna Gooch Tharp, Northeast Regional Medical Center

Jeanna has been an employee of Northeast Regional Medical Center for over 31 years. She always puts patient care first. She works countless hours to help cover call-ins and make sure her teams always have adequate staff. Jeanna is an experienced nurse in Med/Surg, Step Down, Critical Care and Swing Bed. She is a patient advocate and works hard to educate staff and serve as a mentor to new nursing leadership.

Jamille Twedt, Cox Medical Center Branson

Jamille in one word is dedicated. Jamille is dedicated to being the best and doing the best for our patients, staff and management. Jamille is dedicated to serving the patients with all their needs, even with the needs of their family. Jamille is dedicated in her staff. She communicates to her team with a positive demeanor, even when there is a problem. Mistakes are a learning tool with Jamille. Jamille is dedicated to learning new practices. She encourages her staff to be better than her, she encourages them to continue education, to learn new practices. Jamille is team-oriented. Jamille is extremely approachable, you can talk to her about anything. She will be honest with you and help you work it out. Jamille is flexible with her staff, as a team, Jamille has helped us find coverage if one of the team members needs to be off. Jamille has an optimistic outlook on life in general. Jamille is very intelligent. She looks at the big picture and thinks out of the box each day to better our process.

Stephanie Welch, Liberty Hospital

Stephanie is always advocating for her patients and responds to all calls in a timely fashion. Stephanie is also a great coworker and a true teammate by offering others assistance when needed. Stephanie even requests her time off around the schedule of her aligned provider to decrease work for her teammates. Stephanie is also a “Ray of Sunshine” because every month she changes the decor at her desk to go along with the holiday/season. She ensures her tasteful decor injects a positive vibe. Many co-workers have mentioned Stephanie’s name when they discuss someone they enjoy working alongside and when they talk about an amazing nurse. Stephanie may fly “under the radar” because she doesn’t just do one thing that is amazing — she is consistently providing amazing care and the examples are too many to mention — and that is why Stephanie Welch is so deserving of this award. So proud to work with her. Every day of work with Stephanie is a good day!

Katie Womach, Liberty Hospital

I have had the privilege of leading Katie for the last year and a half. She is a float nurse at our organization and possesses everything nursing is. She is kind, compassionate and delivers patient-centered care every shift. She precepts new nurses with the patience it requires and meets them where they are at. Despite the challenging days health care sometimes entails, you won’t see her without a smile on her face. She is there for her team and most of all her patients. She is worthy of this award for her personal devotion to care about the patient not just for them. Thank you for your consideration.

Jane Young, Samaritan Hospital

Jane is a caring and unique caregiver, her heart is her biggest asset! She has been in the health care field for many years, and as the Director of Nursing and Administrator, she goes above and beyond every single day. There is not a staff member in our hospital or surrounding hospitals that does not recognize how amazing she is. She can fill in pretty much any and all departments in the hospital and never is too busy to help a coworker. Her love for her patients is seen in all aspects of care. Her leadership is undeniably what every leader should strive to be like. Jane is involved in the community in numerous ways, as well. Without a doubt when she retires, they will need to hire 20 people to replace her!

The 7South Team at Liberty Hospital consistently exhibits personalized, patient-centered care. Time and time again, this team has gone above and beyond to ensure that patients and their families receive the best care during end-of-life transitions. They work together as a team to ensure no patient or family is left alone during their time of greatest need, they work to allow all members of the family to say goodbye to their loved ones and they collaborate with the patient care team to ensure all needs are met. This team received the most amazing DAISY award nomination from a family whose care was greatly impacted by the entire team, which led to them winning the DAISY Team Award for 2022.

8th Floor Hospital Pavilion, North Kansas City Hospital

NKCH’s 8th Floor Hospital Pavilion team is among the best in the nation. Made up of 105 core employees and eight ancillary team members, they outperform national benchmarks for prevention of falls with injuries, hospital-acquired pressure injuries and central-line bloodstream infections.

“What sets 8 HSP apart is the intentionality of practice,” said Clinical Excellence Senior Director Ashley Peacock, MSN, RN. “Rounding is planned and intentional by nurses and nurse leaders. The teamwork is outstanding, and their commitment shows in excellent patient outcomes.”

8 HSP is a 65-bed med/surg unit for bariatric, gynecology, infectious disease and urology patients. Caring for a range of medical needs, they rank in the top 1% for patient experience performance in their peer group.

“8 HSP’s success comes from the unit director,” Peacock said of Krisha Klug, MSN, RN. “A servant leader, she has instilled every team member to serve each other and their patients and families.”

Acute and Sub-Acute Nursing Care Teams, Lakeland Behavioral Health System

Treating patients ages 4-17 and 55+, Lakeland’s Acute Nursing Team provides outstanding care. Our team responded to the changing needs of our patient population, assessing and creating additional programming, building new tools, and developing a stronger capacity for improving mental health treatment and healing. Lakeland’s nurses themselves are a diverse group, bringing skills from an array of backgrounds and supporting one another with multiple talents. Among our proudest moments this year, Lakeland graduated our very first nurse through Ozarks Technical Community College through our scholarship program.

Due to the growing need for mental health services throughout our region, Lakeland’s team lowered the age range for our senior adult program to 55. Additionally, we grew our programs to offer sub-acute treatment for patients requiring a greater level of advertency beyond our original acute treatment. This team deserves recognition as an outstanding group as a whole.

Convenient Care at Swansea, BJC HealthCare

I have been here for almost four years when we first opened the BJC Convenient Care during the pandemic, and I have watched myself and team go above and beyond for the patients, sometimes without even having all equipment we needed at the time. I feel like because we are a convenient care outside of the hospital, we are overlooked and never included in activities and many things hospitals offer employees. Although we are here for the patients, we show our gratitude to be able to work in such a great establishment. My team is awesome!!! Even the ones that have come and gone now. Together we stand! Thanks!

Critical Care Team, Christian Hospital

I am proud to work with one of the best families in all of St. Louis. The Critical Care Team at Christian Hospital is amazing. Our values are true teamwork and healing. Nurses work hand-in-hand with CCP and other departments. We will go to other floors to lend help or give teaching. Our charge nurses are so caring and giving that no one feels as if they are on their own. When there is a code or a rapid in the hospital, our teams come running. Our CCPs are teachers, they want to share their knowledge with the staff every chance they get. They are also not afraid to jump in and help nursing staff with anything. Nursing is never alone, all you have to do is pop your head out of the patient’s room and someone will be there to help with a smile on their face. Most of us have been here in this ICU for more than five years with no plans on leaving. We are a family, more than just coworkers and we love what we do. CHNE ICU team is the definition of BJC values and excellent care.

Home Health, Citizens Memorial Hospital

This group of nurses goes above and beyond every day to make sure our loved ones are able to go home and continue care. They work long hours and travel many miles to take care of their patients with compassion. They provide exceptional care and make sure that patients are safe and able to live at home and not have to go to a facility.

Intensive Care Unit, Citizens Memorial Hospital

Over the last three years, our ICU has stepped up to the plate and worked diligently to provide the best critical care to our community. As a community hospital, we saw a major increase in the acuity of patients when the pandemic hit. Our nurses and techs had to quickly adjust and learn to care for sicker patients than they ever have before. We went from an average of one to two vents per month in our eight-bed ICU to routinely caring for eight to 10 vents at a time. During this time, we also became a stroke-certified hospital and began implanting and caring for patients needing impella support. The last three years have stretched and grown the ICU staff to care for a new level of critical care patients that allows our community to be served here where they live rather than hours away from their homes.

Inpatient Cardiac Progressive Care Unit, North Kansas City Hospital

Two and half years ago, I accepted a job offer to be the Director of 10 HSP. When I arrived, half of the staff on my unit were float staff and we had job openings for both nurses and techs. When I spoke to float staff, they would tell me that people hated working on my unit because it was so busy and none of the staff stayed. When I met with the staff that I did have, WE, as a team, decided to turn that around.

This group of nurses and techs joined together! Their focus was on teamwork. They went out of their way to make new and float staff feel welcomed on our unit. Two and half years later,  our unit-based council has a waitlist, we have one open nurse position and this team is the most supportive team I have ever worked with. We celebrate weddings, babies and enjoy getting together outside of work. This unit truly is a family. I have seen this team support patients, families and each other — as a team. I am so proud to work with such an amazing group of people.

Maternity/Labor and Delivery, Cox Medical Center Branson

This team has grown and flourished so much over the past few years. They experienced many of the challenges that COVID-19 brought with it. They lost staff due to traveling opportunities, experienced unprecedented stress due to family illness and schools closing, anxiety surrounding COVID itself, and so much more. The staffing crisis was real, they closed the pediatric unit to help keep the labor and delivery unit running. The manager stepped in and worked so many shifts on the unit and has fostered such an amazing and positive work environment despite so many challenges. They lost around 45%-55% of the unit in 2020 and are almost fully staffed again. The team is absolutely amazing and has not only survived but thrived in an environment where many hospitals and units are continuing to struggle. They provide quality and compassionate care to patients with excellent patient care outcomes and patient satisfaction. They happily and wholeheartedly step up to serve our community, through love.

Medical Arts Clinic North, Parkland Health Center

The team at Mac North, Hunter Wadlow’s office is exceptional. They are always willing to add someone on to help. The staff regularly assist with In-basket messages and referrals from Farmington. Patient questions are answered in a timely manner.

Neurology, Capital Region Medical Center

The physicians and nurses at the CRMC Neurology Clinic are a tight-knit team who work closely together to provide excellent and safe patient care. Being the only two neurologists in Jefferson City, many patients are efficiently seen every day. The physicians provide neurological-related care both in clinic and hospital settings. Patients are evaluated and diagnosed with a multitude of neurological disorders and then receive specific treatments that help to treat and prevent disease progression, depending on the neurological disorder. The CRMC neurology team goes above and beyond to care for patients.

Occupational Health, BJC HealthCare

Occupational health nurses are typically in the background, but in March 2020, the Occupational Health team at BJC was thrust into the forefront of the pandemic response. Overnight, they began an effort to keep our employees safe and healthy during the impossible circumstances surrounding COVID-19, all while facing the same fears and unknowns as the rest of the world. Our team was on-call 24/7. They were kind when many reacted with fear or hostility. When vaccines arrived, our team began vaccinating as many people as fast as possible. They were kind and empathetic when they were met with trepidation and angst, and they endured. During the pandemic, there was a rise in workplace violence when many become angry or hostile due to their own fear of circumstances related to COVID-19. Our team does this because they are inspired to keep their colleagues safe, even when their own cup is empty. At BJC HealthCare, our occupational health nurses are true heroes and should be recognized.

Outpatient Infusion Center, Barnes-Jewish Hospital

This group of nurses is highly skilled, a paradigm of cooperation and teamwork, and provides some of the most compassionate and comprehensive care I have ever witnessed. They operate 19 infusion suites with as many as 50 patients a day. They provide a clean and welcoming environment, drinks, snacks, med-recs, premeds, infusions, scheduling, and all of it with sincere compassion. They have won a prestigious PRC-5 Star award for the past three years. I think their culture of cooperation and compassion should continue to be recognized as an example of excellence to be emulated. I am thankful every day I get to come to work with them.

Outpatient Surgery Department, Pike County Memorial Hospital

We are a very rural area where special health services are extremely hard to find within an hour’s drive. PCMH’s OPS department has expanded their services in our community within the last couple of years to include urology procedures, foot surgeries, eye surgeries, orthopedic surgeries and tonsil/adenoidectomies. They even recently did a total knee replacement for a patient that lives in our small town. The patient’s loved ones were able to easily visit and arrange pick-up and outpatient therapy, something that has never been able to be done around here before. OPS also administers specialized medications/infusions (i.e., lupus/rheumatoid arthritis therapies) that patients usually have to travel an hour to receive. The department gave hundreds of COVID-19 monoclonal antibodies to our rural residents during peak periods when the next closest infusion site was over 50 miles away. They are literally changing lives in our area by providing easier access to much-needed procedures/medications.

Specialty Care Clinic, Samaritan Memorial Hospital

These Nurses are providing top-notch care to rural Missouri. They are our co-workers, our neighbors, our friends and they take caring to the next level. My family has been extremely blessed to have their help and experience. They were wonderful when my mother was using the clinic with her infusions and visiting the rheumatologist. Now my husband is using the clinic for bladder issues, and these ladies have been outstanding with their help and compassion.

Wound Ostomy Care Team, Children’s Mercy Kansas City

The Wound Care Team touches and has an impact on the entire organization. This team of five bachelor’s and master’s prepared nurses is certified in wound and ostomy care through the WOCNCB. They take their specialty and bedside nursing knowledge and use it to support patients, families and front-line staff. Their consultative nursing role allows them to be strong advocates for patients, families and front-line staff. Their patient-focused care often means wearing multiple hats before the day is over! They have a passion for patient and staff safety and are the leaders of the organization’s efforts to reduce hospital-acquired pressure injuries, medical adhesive-related skin injuries and similar skin issues. This team has an incredible balance of experience and expertise, including former ICN, PICU, Med-Surg and Adult Nursing. The WOC Team this year celebrates the 45th year of their specialty.

Nicholas Baldwin, Parkland Health Center

Nick goes above and beyond to help every single one of our patients that come through our doors every day. He always lends a helping hand to co-workers in need (even if he does not know the answer — he finds it). All patients that come in contact with Nick have nothing other than nice things to say. Most patients ask for him every time they call about a personal issue. On top of being an outstanding MA, he also carries the role of Safety Champion. One of the reasons our office is always in compliance is because of his thoroughness, organization and attention to detail. He is a huge asset to our team and BJC.

Elizabeth “Beth” Briner, Christian Hospital

Beth is a registered respiratory therapist who took on a project to update and enhance the education our patients receive in the pulmonary function department regarding their chronic illnesses. She contacted organizations like the American Lung Association to get easy-to-read information on certain diseases, such as COPD. She compiled a library of resources that are easy for the patients to understand. She went above and beyond to gather these resources to enhance the care for our patients.

Amy Buckaloo, Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital

Amy is the best manager I’ve ever had. She jumps in the day and helps out with anything staff needs. She’s transported people, given patients baths, repositioned patients, given meds…well you get it. As the ADON, I know she has a lot of her own work, but she never hesitates to help out her team. She asks how we are, she checks on us, she makes sure we are healthy, had lunches, take our breaks. She is great at helping out with the schedule if we need to switch shifts, etc. You can talk to her about anything, work-related or personal. She truly cares and she shows it.

Mary Carroll Burton, BJC HealthCare

BJC HealthCare in St. Louis includes 15 hospitals and several other ambulatory sites. Mary Burton manages clinical quality reporting for the system and assists hospitals with education to help implement processes to improve the care of patients through reduction of preventable harm, hospital-acquired infections and safety events, part of our mission to provide exceptional care.

During the pandemic, she was an integral part of supporting the community, volunteering her time at the BJC call center, and she and her team stood up a vaccine clinic in North St. Louis County, vaccinating 1,000 patients per day. She was solely responsible for planning and organizing vaccine reporting for system submission.

Not only does Mary’s work exemplify a champion of care, her empathy, integrity and caring attitude make her an amazing nurse and leader in quality. Her experience, knowledge and mentorship are invaluable to BJC and those that get the privilege to work with her. She is truly a champion of care.

Dr. Kelsey Davis-Humes, Scotland County Hospital

When I think of what an ideal physician that is making a difference looks like, I think of Dr. Kelsey Davis-Humes. Whether she’s volunteering at community events, hosting an Easter egg hunt at a rural clinic, delivering a baby at 3 a.m. or checking in on administration asking if there’s anything they need, her actions continue to show her passion. She provides family practice and OB care in rural Northeast Missouri. As many know, rural hospitals are struggling financially, and many hospitals have closed their OB programs down. Dr. Davis-Humes is very passionate about OB and maternal care and has dedicated her time and efforts to continue to make Scotland County Hospital’s OB program successful.

Dr. Davis-Humes provides input into marketing and outreach strategies and works closely with SCH administration. She goes above and beyond for our organization, not only volunteering her time, but serves as a medical director of two clinics, medical director of OB and serves on many committees.

Veronica Gorden, Ozarks Healthcare

Vern goes above and beyond her duties as Unit Coordinator. She is always busy helping patients and her co-workers. She takes patients out after procedures, runs specimens to the lab, offers warm blankets, and gets refreshments to patients and families. She never sits down and is constantly busy. She has a great smile and helps patients relax prior to procedures by talking with them. She is a fun co-worker and an invaluable resource to our department. She helps everything run smoothly. We would be lost without her!

Barry Hanger, Parkland Health Center

Hannah, Barnes-Jewish Hospital

Hannah is the OR satellite pharmacy supervisor. Since she took the job, she has been spot-on for any issues, concerns, problems, etc. Hannah is so approachable as a supervisor. You can bring any issues, ideas, etc., and she is always willing to listen and available for her staff. Hannah exemplifies all of the BJC values and always goes above and beyond for her staff and Barnes Hospital.

Winona Harris, Parkland Health Center

Winona is full of energy and compassion. I have seen her compassion as she deals with very irate patients. She has a really calm way of explaining why waits might be long and tries to help in any way that she can. She helps to keep an eye on patients even after registration and then involves other staff members as she realizes that exigent circumstances exist. Patient access can be a thankless and often little-noticed department, but she has helped many upset patients to relax and understand what is going on.

Julie Holtz, Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital

Julie goes above and beyond for all of her patients and co-workers. She is exceptional at teaching both patients and their family members, and she always makes everyone feel like they are the first person she has spoken with that day.  Despite working shorthanded, she always is positive and has a smile on her face and will to help whoever needs it!  She is a true asset to BJSP.

Shari Kicker, Capital Region Medical Center

As a health care worker myself, I have seen and met many awesome and diverse health care workers. This past February, I had an onset of vertigo that was debilitating. I was referred to Shari who saw me promptly and performed tests to rule out/in Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo. Shari, during this time, was contacting me on a frequent basis to see how I was doing. Shari repeated the vestibular test, using specialized goggles. It was at this time she was able to see the nystagmus and believed that this was BPPV. She worked with me on some maneuvers to correct this issue. Shari would come into town on her days off to meet me, assess me and perform maneuvers that she believed would benefit my condition. Shari’s compassion and care for her patients goes above and beyond any health care worker I have ever encountered. We are truly blessed to have someone of this magnitude working in our community, to care and treat the patients she works with.

Jillian Knudsen, North Kansas City Hospital

Most wouldn’t realize how much behind-the-scenes work goes into making sure quality care is given by our bedside nurses each day, but Jillian continually is working to make sure that NKCH offers safe care and never takes any credit for the role she plays. Jillian never hesitates to provide her knowledge and expertise to bedside leaders, directors and her own team in the Performance Improvement Department. She also co-leads the Orthopedic Co-Management, providing leadership to the orthopedic surgery certification program. Jillian creates a positive, welcoming atmosphere in any situation and has created a safe environment for her team to identify problems and work toward solutions. When resources are needed, Jillian always finds a way to get us what we need. We all know that life can’t be all work and no play, so she also makes sure to plan fun department outings for her team to bond and have fun while at work.

Nancy Lock, Carroll County Memorial Hospital

Nancy is a compassionate caregiver and fearless patient advocate. She invests her whole self in fulfilling the needs of those struggling to navigate their care. Once she becomes involved in a case, she finds real solutions for big problems and refuses to pass them off until their needs are met.

Nancy was inspired to become a physical therapist because of her father who suffered from paraplegia. She said, “He always wanted to walk again and I wanted to help him walk again and that didn’t happen, but every time someone gets up and walks, it is kind of one of those wishes coming true.”

For 38 years, Nancy has built a thriving department that stays on the forefront of medicine. She has personally trained countless PT students, and her imprint can be found throughout the Midwest in numerous health care systems.

Her excellent program is referred across the region, and patients bypass other facilities because they know the quality of care her team provides. She is our Champion of Care.

Karin Lowery, BJC HealthCare

Karin is such a wonderful support person for our occupational health team. She beautifies our projects and makes them look so professional. She sends out almost daily uplifting and/or funny pictures with notations. She sends out Monday resiliency messages that are so encouraging and gives you pause to reflect. She is just a very kind and very helpful team member.

Teresa Lukefhar, St. Francis Hospital

Teresa is all about serving her volunteers and people surrounding them. Her duties are numerous; always a smile and courteous; very patient; she can recruit, train, orient, schedule staff in 13 departments, always monitoring and interacting. As well with the auxiliary sales and events, she does the hospital care fund family engagement committee emails for patients, staff doctors offices, boutiques and pastoral care. She takes care of laundry distribution, does hospice linen care, supplies surgery and critical care, stocks both waiting rooms, does news tidbits letters, backup for the boutique coordinator, and trains. She never stops. She makes sure all entries to the hospital were supplied with masks during COVID, even handling disruptive people during with dignity an respect. She is our go-to person any time anything is needed, she has the answer. I truly feel she deserves recognition for her above-and-beyond service. We are honored to have her on our team.

Marina, Barnes-Jewish Hospital

Marina is passionate about her job as an OR/ICU pharmacist on PVT/SWT. She is very knowledgeable and shares such with the nursing, anesthesia, surgical staff and the pharmacy staff she works with daily. She will find information for the staff and give them printouts and highlight areas that pertain to that question. Marina exemplifies the BJC standards of care in all she does during her work shift.

Jennifer Myers, Mercy Hospital Lebanon

Jennifer is the only IP co-worker for our entire hospital. She is a salaried co-worker but is often contacted outside her normal work schedule. Her duties are numerous, but she does them knowing that without her dedication to this field, our patients, coworkers and visitors might be at risk. While her role is critical to our hospital, she is not often appreciated by the co-workers the way that she should be. Her role is one of data monitoring, reporting, observing, educating and holding coworkers accountable. She is definitely a Champion of Care.

Alissa Potocnik, Lee’s Summit Medical Center

As a Speech Language Pathologist in the Inpatient Rehabilitation Department, Alissa Potocnik excels at working with those who especially need her expertise: patients with aphasia. She was instrumental in developing Lee’s Summit Medical Center’s Community Aphasia Group, which helps patients improve their communication abilities and provides their caregivers with the resources and support they need. Alissa creates new plans and activities for each session to keep attendees engaged and foster communication, as well as social activities to build camaraderie and community. She also serves as an adjunct professor at Rockhurst University and invites her speech therapy students to work with the group to develop their clinical skills. Thanks to Alissa’s leadership, the Community Aphasia Group has become well-known and draws referrals from other area facilities and therapists. Alissa is a consistent high performer who, day in and day out, goes the extra mile for her patients and coworkers.

David Simily, Barnes-Jewish Hospital

Officer Simily shows up every day and goes above and beyond for everyone. His people skills and the way he connects to staff and patients is none other. He is constantly checking with staff to ensure their needs are met. He makes sure that patients are safe and understand exactly what is going on. He puts on his uniform and everyone else’s needs come before his own. A true leader and an example of what public safety stands for in a hospital.

Donna Stokes, Mercy Hospital Joplin

Donna Stokes is a long-time Infection Preventionist who embodies the concept of Champion of Care. Donna has been a committed member of Mercy Joplin (formerly St. John’s Regional Medical Center) since 1978. An RN with an oncology background, she joined the IP team in 1990 and has committed her career to protecting patients. As the lead IP in the Joplin area, she supports several smaller hospitals and clinics nearby when there is staff turnover, clusters or outbreaks, or new processes to be implemented. As an active member of the overall IP team for the Mercy system, Donna leads the team that sets all IP policies for our 40+ hospitals and health care areas.

Donna was at Mercy Joplin during the notable tornado in 2011, supporting that community through the event and rebuilding, but also sharing the knowledge learned with many IPs at conferences nationally. In her spare time, Donna volunteers at several community organizations, including the Emergency Healthcare Coalition.

Molly Walker, St. Louis Children’s Hospital

I am a new employee in the Children’s Sleep Center who has been trained by Molly. Throughout my training, she has gone above and beyond teaching me not only the logistics of conducting a sleep study on children of all ages but also showing true compassion for each patient she comes in contact with. Every child matters to Molly and it shows. She goes above and beyond to make sure each child trusts her and is not scared of the procedure, ensuring the patient’s special lovie they brought is outfitted with sensors to match the patient, and even allowing patients to put wires on her to show them it’s okay and won’t hurt a bit! Once the child is asleep, the real work begins, and Molly ensures that she collects exceptional data for the physicians to properly assess and treat each patient. I feel extremely lucky to be led by an employee who has such high standards regarding respect, teamwork and accountability as my trainer for my first job in pediatric medicine.

Lauren Walter, Children’s Mercy Hospital Kansas

Lauren is new to the team lead role in the CMK OR. Just recently, our volume for cochlear implant insertions has increased. If one case cancels, the surgeons try to place another patient in the block as soon as possible. The reason is because there is a small window of age where it is optimal to perform these surgeries so the child can have the best outcome. Since we order as the cases come up, some of these patients wouldn’t get their implants in time and surgery was delayed. Lauren built a team inclusive of audiology, surgeons, cochlear company, supply chain and perioperative staff to brainstorm an improved process of acquiring the correct items without risking unnecessary return of items or delaying with surgery. The resolution was to create a PAR of implants to keep at the hospital and a change of practice for acquiring the accessories. Change was not easy for many, and there was pushback. Lauren persevered, and a process improvement began all to better serve our patients.

Cardiovascular Cath Lab, Cox Medical Center Branson

We have a 10-person team, with seven working and taking call. There is never an argument, there is never an issue when we work together. In my year of being on this team, I have seen nurses and techs cover call and illnesses without question. I see them hustle to protect the patient every time that pager goes off. They sacrifice without a need to be recognized! This year, we were given platinum status for our STEMI efforts! Every cath lab in the country works hard to save that life. I feel this team goes above and beyond to care for and pray with our patients, and ensure they are well cared for physically, emotionally and spiritually! That includes family.

Community Health, Barnes-Jewish Hospital

The BJH Community Health Workers are Anna Fairchild, Cynthia Thomas and Sydney Williams, and they work with the Primary Medicine Clinic’s high-risk and underserved patients. The CHWs target recently hospitalized patients and patients that have three or more ED visits within the last six months. CHWs provide a thorough social assessment and assist each patient to access resources and develop individualized short- and long-term health goals. CHWs help patients address the social challenges that often contribute to poor health outcomes. Specifically, they help patients with the tasks of accessing medical care and dealing with the life issues that keep them from reaching their health goals (financial resource strain, transportation challenges, insufficient social connections, housing instability, food insecurity, etc.). CHWs provide social support, advocacy and resource navigation during the 30 to 60 days that patients are enrolled.

Critical Care Transport Team, Children’s Mercy

The Children’s Mercy Critical Care Transport Team leads the nation in providing the highest level of care by ground ambulance, fixed-wing plane and helicopter. As one of the busiest specialty transport services in the country, CM Critical Care Transport has been nationally recognized for all modes of transport while caring for the sickest, most vulnerable of patients.

Their highly trained interdisciplinary team consists of emergency medical technicians, critical care registered nurses and respiratory therapists, and high-risk obstetric nurses. Team members exhaustively cross-train in order to provide life-saving care to Missouri neonates, kids and pregnant mothers. The team has received CAMTS safety accreditation eight consecutive times and shares its best practices guidelines to other teams all over the U.S.

CMCCT crew members work long hours in all kinds of weather conditions in order to take Children’s Mercy to the bedside of any child that needs them. They are the best of the best!

Emergency Department, Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital

Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital is a small community hospital with many levels of expertise. The ED shows its expertise daily. This group of team members specializes in their ability to adapt, change, learn and grow in this new world of emergency care. They have the knowledge and ability to care for multiple acuity levels at the same time. With the new capacity issues, the team has the ability to also care for those same patients in unusual and nontraditional treatment spaces. Regardless of the day or situation, BJSP ED shines. EDs are brilliant, adaptive, quirky, wild, strong and capable. Shine on, team.

Emergency Department, Liberty Hospital

The Liberty Hospital ED is comprised of many disciplines: RNs, LPNs, patient care techs, paramedics, physicians and NPs. Over my 18 years of nursing, I have never met a group of people as united and team-oriented as this one. Everyone works together to care for patients on their worst days. From trauma to childbirth, they see it all with a smile on their faces. They strive to deliver fast, compassionate care to anyone that walks through the ER doors. They have increased their patient experience scores through hard work and dedication. I have seen some of the most wonderful compliments from the ED patients, and while the team doesn’t know it, they are changing lives for the better, all in a day’s work. I’m proud to work beside these talented men and women every day, and I hope they get the recognition they deserve — even if they don’t see how great they are, our community does.

Emergency Department Leadership Team, Children’s Mercy

The ED Leadership Team worked closely with OD and Change Management to move from two separate leadership structures to one team. The redesign worked to establish one team with defined roles/responsibilities and to set expectations for leaders and staff. Through stay interviews, NDNQI, and a survey, three areas of concern were identified to improve staff engagement. Those areas are: recruitment/retention, well-being and staff development. Each leader is creating a workgroup of front-line staff to explore these areas and close the gap. RN turnover has decreased, engagement in ED town halls has increased, and the team is working together to live the CM values each day and to help staff find joy in the work we do each day.

Breast Care Consultants, Missouri Baptist Medical Center

This practice takes excellent care of every single patient that they see no matter how big or small their patient’s issue is. They see every type of breast issue possible. They offer a newly diagnosed breast cancer patient an appointment for a consultation within 48 hours of being given their diagnosis. Every single member of their team is kind, compassionate, caring, and goes above and beyond for every single patient they see. They respond quickly to patient questions, whether it is by phone or through the MyChart portal. They make every patient feel listened to and heard, and Dr. Yazdi makes sure his patients feel that they are part of making decisions that are right for them. He is a great physician with an excellent bedside manner. He takes pride in his surgical work and wants every patient to feel that they have had nothing less than excellent care.

This office has maintained a 90th percentile of patient satisfaction even though they deal with very delicate issues for patients who either are getting a workup to find out if they have a serious breast issue or they know they have breast cancer and have to be seen to discuss what their options are going to be. From the initial call to the actual office visit to the scheduling of surgeries and then the follow-up visits, these patients have continued to give the entire office the highest scores for caring, compassion, respect, teamwork and safety. Every single patient is treated with the highest amount of the above five values. The office standard is to offer every new breast cancer patient who has been diagnosed at Missouri Baptist Breast Center and referred to them an appointment to be seen within 48 hours. Dr. Paul Yazdi and Amy Eberhardt, NP, have been a team for over 14 years and have maintained these standards as the practice has grown.

Healthy Kids Express, St. Louis Childrens Hospital

The community health workers at Healthy Kids Express work to give families resources to access care and improve health care disparities. Tony, Tanika and Kionna worked to give families holiday presents this year by using donations from several community partners. They collected presents and wrapped and delivered the items to multiple families in our community. They are a valuable resource for our department. They connect patients to dental care, vision and hearing resources, and guide families through the process of applying for insurance and medication assistance programs. They do this daily with grace and kindness. The families are very receptive to having Tony and Kionna help them navigate the complex assistance programs offered throughout St. Louis. They have a wealth of knowledge and an amazing ability to connect with our patients. They are truly Champions of Care and live our hospital’s motto to do what’s right for kids every day with every interaction.

Healthy Kids Express Asthma, St Louis Children’s Hospital

Healthy Kids Express Asthma provides free asthma care to underserved and vulnerable communities. Visiting students at their school in the mobile unit makes this program invaluable.

The team educates 577 students on self-care for asthma at 16 different elementary and middle schools in seven districts. Students are taught the correct way to use their asthma equipment. Free spacers for home and school are provided. Shared decision-making is done with the caregiver and provider to develop a plan of care. Each student receives an individualized Asthma Action Plan. Parents are not required on the van, which breaks a common barrier. Phone calls help to develop relationships and educate families. Families reach out to us to assist when having difficulties or concerns. Community health workers have assisted 58 families, addressing social determinants of health. Asthma coaches provide intensive interactions with 44 families. In summary, HKEA staff are Champions of Care!

Healthy Kids Virtual Behavioral Health Team, St. Louis Children’s Hospital

The virtual behavioral health team is making a great impact on helping children navigate the challenges in their lives. The children have issues from bullying, behavioral issues, separation anxiety, violence and bereavement. The therapists are cultivating a strong relationship with the students. This is shown by the student intentionally taking the time to type in comments in the after-every-visit survey. The comments are positive and call out their therapists by name. The team has had many difficult issues to help the students overcome, and they have accomplished that with the greatest respect and compassion.

Home Health, Citizens Memorial Hospital

There are situations where we may experience fear or be exposed to things that jeopardize our own health. There are times of sadness, pain and feelings of being broken. When we are questioned why we do this, we say it because we are a team that goes above and beyond our duties by facing anything life throws at us while providing true compassionate, high-quality care! We serve those who may otherwise not get the care they deserve, even in the worst situations. We do it all while also reducing the number of patients having to go into LTC or flooding the ER. All of the CMH Home Health staff are one amazing group of individuals who deserve the title of Champions because there is no I in a TEAM like this.

Lafayette Regional Health Center

Lafayette Regional Health Center is a CAH in rural Lexington, Mo., that goes above and beyond every day to care for our patients and community. LRHC takes pride in providing great care with ZERO harm — we had zero HAIs in 2022 — what an achievement!! Staff at LRHC work as a family to care for each other and our patients. LRHC was recognized as a CMS 5 Star hospital in 2022. LRHC was surveyed by The Joint Commission in April 2022 and was awarded Critical Access Hospital accreditation. LRHC has numerous tenured staff and leadership who take pride in wanting our facility to be the best at the services our facility provides. LRHC has received quality best practices awards from the National Rural Health Association in previous years. Community service is part of LRHCs mission, vision and values.

Nurse Advice Line, Children’s Mercy

The CMH Nurse Advice Line is a remote team that works 24/7 to triage calls for not only the Kansas City pediatric community but callers with concerns throughout Kansas and Missouri. Our job is to get kids to the correct level of care at the correct time on each and every call. We strive to give families information to assist with caring for their child at home; we often do a follow-up email with care information for the family to use. We assist families in finding local clinics/hospitals to go to as indicated by the child’s condition. We often help families with other resources, such as transportation. Our nurses often receive positive comments from families who have used the Nurse Advice Line. The following comment sums up our team nicely: “The nurse line is a complete lifesaver. The nurse I spoke with was extremely thorough, understanding and kind. I felt that she took my concerns seriously, and she was very confident in her advice. I’m so glad she was there to help my family and me.”

Operating Room Support Techs, Christian Hospital

I would like to take the time to say thanks for the hard work to the OR Support Techs at Christian Hospital. These people are rarely recognized but play a big part in the day-to-day operations for the surgery department. They all work hard, and as a team even when they are short-staffed, they get the job done. Ron, Billy, Eric and Anika all go above and beyond the call of duty putting the patients as their number one priority. They make sure the patients are transported down to surgery safely and within a timely manner. Not only that, but these individuals make sure case carts are made for surgery, run and get items for the rooms, get blood, take items to the lab, and much more. These individuals are the heart of the surgery department, and like I said before, they are rarely recognized. So I just want to send a big shout-out to them and say THANK YOU

Performance Improvement, North Kansas City Hospital

Having worked in nursing leadership for over five years, I wasn’t sure what to expect joining a new team outside of formal leadership. Previous positions I have held in nursing have required me to learn information on my own, which was my preconceived notion about this role. From the moment I joined this team, everyone has been incredibly supportive and kind. I have never seen a team that was as cohesive as this one. This team cares deeply about the patients who receive care and work tirelessly to ensure the hospital care team is up-to-date with best practices. This team has mastered policy and process change in a nonpunitive way that buys support from stakeholders. Having been bedside nurses, this team understands the difficulties of patient care and empathizes with staff. The leadership in P.I. have seamlessly cultivated a just culture and leads with true servanthood. I have never felt more honored and humbled to be a part of a team as I am now.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation, Barnes-Jewish Hospital

This team goes beyond great care for patients. They’re the team that encourages, pushes and sometimes cheers (with pom-poms), whatever it takes to get patients, especially lung transplant patients, back to the people and things they love. The Pulmonary Rehab team brings joy and laughter to those down in spirit, exudes love and compassion for the brokenhearted, is always willing to wipe tears, and is there with open arms to comfort, encourage and educate the patients, their families and caregivers to ensure they’re well equipped for their new lease on life.

Radiation Therapy, Capital Region Medical Center

This team is cohesive, caring and, more importantly, a family. The team leader is Dr. James Allen, and he maintains a positive working environment and is the team champion. He encourages this team to always deliver the best. The team works hard at making sure every patient feels as though they are the most important patient under treatment. The therapists are proficient and keep the schedule on time, all the while making sure the patients never feel rushed or like they are on an assembly line. The team works as a whole through communication, a set weekly meeting to discuss those under treatment, and teamwork to ensure our patients are happy and well cared for. Many of the patients when they have completed their course of radiation often express they are sad to be done and they will miss coming in to see everyone each day. The radiation nurses provide education and assist with any concerns the patients may have during their treatment course. This team works very well together.

The radiation therapy team is a blessing to the Cancer Center. They offer a friendly, comforting face to all of our patients. Since they see most patients every day during the course of their treatment, they are able to create a strong bond with our patients. They work behind the scenes and most of the time they go unseen, yet they have the power to see right through you. No, I am not talking about spies or psychics, I am of course referring to our brilliant team of Radiologic Imaging Technologists.

Our technologists (Radiology, Advanced Modality (CT, MRI, Interventional Radiology), Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine) and all of the professions that support us and work directly with us (Radiologists, IR Nursing, Patient Access, Scheduling) play an extremely important role in patient care and health care safety.

Our team at Saint Louis Children’s Hospital goes above and beyond every single day to take care of our pediatric patients. They show patients and parents compassion and respect. They provide excellent images for our radiologists to read, and they keep our patients safe while in our care. They work together as a team to ensure that everything goes according to plan.

This team of 14 speech therapists provides exceptional, compassionate care to children and adults in our seven-county service area. We provide therapy services to inpatients, home health patients, outpatients and school children in the inpatient, home, school and outpatient settings. With nearly 150 years of combined experience, as well as specialized services and certifications, this team goes above and beyond, not only for their patients, but for each other.
