The Future Mission of Rural Hospitals: Local Health & Economic Vitality Hubs Enabled by Innovation and Collaboration
BioSTL, a globally recognized leader in building an innovation economy in St. Louis, has been working with Missouri’s largest economic engines of agriculture and health care, and alongside underserved urban and rural communities and their leaders, to build a new model for strengthening economic vitality across Missouri.
Through its Center for Rural Health Innovation, BioSTL’s goal is to enable rural hospitals to make health care accessible and affordable by bringing a new, rural-centric health care model, catalyzed by innovation, which bridges the current fee-for-service reimbursement model with future reimbursement models ― whatever they might be. Imagine a rural health care delivery model where care is accessible 24/7 and comes to the person versus the person having to come to the care. A model focusing on holistic care and population health leads to improved health outcomes, better health quality and lower cost while improving the economic viability of the rural community served by the hospital. Rural health care providers are uniquely positioned to test, trial and identify innovation, and BioSTL is committed to working with rural hospitals to reduce risk and inform policy as it relates to innovation.
CRHI has been working with Golden Valley Memorial Hospital CEO Craig Thompson and his leadership team to source and deploy curated innovation that addresses GVMH’s strategic priorities. Thompson and Chauhan will highlight a few case studies showcasing the new model of health and will demonstrate how hospitals can become financially successful engines of health and economic vitality for the communities they serve.
- learn why relocalizing and personalizing health care is key to improving health and economic vitality in rural and underserved urban communities and how innovation is foundational to this “health creation” agenda
- learn from case studies provided by GVMH and BioSTL’s CRHI, the action plan for improving health and economic vitality in your community

A Turning Point for Hospitals and Health Systems
Hospitals and health systems have entered into a new and difficult post-pandemic environment. The traditional revenue and expense model continues to show signs of breaking down, with organizations able to make only incremental improvements to operating margins. Meanwhile, an intensifying competitive landscape and the continued shift of care delivery to sites outside the hospital setting has made the need to reinvest and remain competitive increasingly urgent.
Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:
- discuss the current health care landscape from financial, operational and competitive marketplace perspectives
- evaluate strategies to improve cost management, consumer experience, institutional resiliency and population health outcomes

- increase trustees’ understanding of their governance role

Making Sense of Health Care’s Post-Disruption Moment
Over the last decade, several large technology and retail companies have made major investments in health care, often with a focus on attracting consumers with affordable, accessible, digitally enabled care models. Legacy hospitals and health systems have watched these moves with varying degrees of concern—or have responded in kind with new service offerings and partnerships to keep pace.
But in the wake of disappointing financial results, many one-time health care “disrupters” — including Walmart and Walgreens—are retreating from the big health care bets they made just a few years ago.
This presentation will explore key lessons for hospital and health system leaders about the rapid rise and equally rapid retrenchment of health care’s disrupters — and how to position their organizations for sustained success in an evolving industry.
Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:
- understand the landscape for retail and technology disrupters in health care, including recent decisions by some companies to scale back their health care operations
- discuss strategies for positioning hospitals and health systems to successfully adapt to changes in the competitive landscape for both legacy providers and new entrant

Ryan Campbell
Author, Pilot, Keynote Speaker
Ryan Campbell is one of the world’s leading mental health and resilience keynote speakers. His gripping story of adventure and adversity leaves audiences in laughter and tears, as well as inspired into action. As a teenager, Campbell became the youngest solo pilot to fly around the world and was named one of Australia’s 50 great explorers. But everything changed after a tragic plane crash that left him with a paraplegic diagnosis. He was told he would never walk again.
Over the next several years, Campbell’s incredible recovery back to walking and flying again defied the odds. While he ticked the boxes that defined success, his mental health had never been worse. Like many in today’s world, Campbell was struggling with burnout, anxiety and depression. His missing puzzle piece wasn’t found in a massive global expedition or miraculous recovery. Campbell’s greatest lesson was parked right in his driveway.
Today, Campbell speaks to organizations around the world about the life-changing power of prioritizing joy. Through the story of his Elvis-inspired 1960 pink Cadillac, he shares accessible and attainable frameworks that will immediately improve mental health, fuel performance and transform culture. Through harnessing the power of joy, Campbell helps audiences shift their thinking so that they can step back in order to show up better. All by asking one simple question, “What’s Your Pink Cadillac?”
