Mercy Hospital Washington and Missouri Baptist Sullivan Hospital partnered with East Central College in Union, Mo., to develop a new and innovative way to get more qualified nursing graduates into the workforce. This model, called “Earn While You Learn to be an R.N.,” transforms the clinical learning experience by immersing second-year associates degree students by letting them engage in paid clinical education. Participating fourth-semester students earn a wage while engaging in hands-on clinical learning via an apprenticeship model. The program is designed to increase student confidence by combining education with real-world clinical practice and acclimating them to the hospital culture. At the same time, the program can help combat the nursing shortage by reducing new nurse turnover rates, reducing onboarding and opening the talent pipeline. The pilot cohort students completed their partnership hours and transitioned into graduate nurses, all of who successfully passed their NCLEX-RN on the first attempt. They remain employed with their hospitals.
