Governor Parson Addresses State LegislatorsStaff Contact: Daniel Landon Governor Mike Parson, who took office June 1 following the resignation of Eric Greitens, gave his first address to a joint session of the Missouri General Assembly. The former Lieutenant Governor emphasized themes of unity of purpose and public service. U.S. House To Vote On 26 Opioid BillsStaff Contacts: Daniel Landon or Leslie Porth The U.S. House of Representatives is slated to vote on 26 bills pertaining to opioid abuse treatment and prevention. Congress is considering scores of such bills this summer. The Congressional Budget Office summarized and assessed the fiscal implications of 59 bills on the topic that have been approved by the House Energy and Commerce committee.

Report Finds Psychiatry Remains Among Top Recruiting ChallengesStaff Contact: Mary Becker Physician recruiting firm Merritt Hawkins released new data, finding psychiatrists are the second most in-demand specialty for the third consecutive year. Missouri has an acute shortage of psychiatrists and behavioral health professionals. Nationally, 77 percent of U.S. counties report a severe shortage of psychiatrists. In 2016, for the first time, the largest share of health care spending in the U.S. is on mental health. According to a Merritt Hawkins spokesperson, “Expanding mental health services is considered a key to addressing societal problems such as mass shootings, suicide and drug addiction. Unfortunately, the shortage of psychiatrists is a serious impediment to this goal.”

Fulton Medical Center Names New CEOStaff Contact: Carol Boessen Mike Reece has been named chief executive officer of Fulton Medical Center, effective Tuesday, May 22. He replaces Isabel Schmedemann who resigned in April to take over as CEO at Herington Municipal Hospital in Herington, Kan. A list of CEO changes is available online.
