U.S. Declares Monkeypox A Public Health Emergency

Yesterday, with the U.S. case count reaching more than 7,000 individuals infected with Monkeypox, the White House declared a public health emergency. This declaration paves the way for improved data-sharing and additional financial resources. PHEs also support expediting vaccine availability, testing and treatment modalities. MHA compiled relevant resources and will continue communicating additional updates as they become available.

New and expecting moms experiencing mental health challenges now have access to a Maternal Mental Health Hotline, which provides a range of support at no cost. Resources include brief interventions from trained counselors, as well as referrals to both community and telehealth providers. In addition, callers will receive evidence-based information and referrals to support groups and other community resources. The hotline, available in English and Spanish, is accessible by phone or text at 1-833-9-HELP4MOMS (1-833-943-5746).

The Children’s Health Insurance Program, commonly known as CHIP, was signed into law by President Clinton 25 years ago today. CHIP provides states the option of using enhanced federal funding to extend health care coverage to children and certain adults at higher income levels than allowed by the regular Medicaid program.
Missouri was an early adopter and used CHIP to expand coverage for most children from 100% FPL to 300% FPL, with families at higher income levels paying a monthly premium. In 2014, Gov. Nixon signed Missouri’s Show Me Healthy Babies program into law, which provides prenatal coverage for women up to 300% FPL who are not otherwise eligible for Medicaid and who do not have access to affordable private health insurance. As of June 30, Missouri’s CHIP program covered 29,000 children and 4,400 pregnant women.
