According to survey findings from NIH of adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic, several factors appeared to shield against harmful effects of the pandemic. Positive factors included supportive relationships with friends and family, as well as healthy behaviors like physical activity and sleep. Conversely, more screen time activities and witnessing racism or discrimination in relation to COVID-19 emerged as negative factors. The study also found that girls, and those who entered the pandemic with existing mental health or sleep problems, appeared to be particularly vulnerable to the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic
