Preventing Patient Falls: What Health Care Facilities Should Know

Audience

CEOs, COOs, CMOs, CNOs, compliance officers, Joint Commission coordinators, quality improvement personnel, risk managers and legal counsel

Overview

Falls are the number one hospital-acquired condition, making it an important patient safety and risk assessment issue. This event will highlight how to comply with The Joint Commission and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services' hospital Conditions of Participation standards on preventing falls. This session also will include information on medications that increase the fall rate and the pharmacist’s role in fall prevention programs.

Attendance is a must for anyone serving on the falls team in addition to any hospital staff members interested in preventing and reducing the number of falls in the hospital setting. All hospitals should have a falls team, and these team members should receive the latest training and information available regarding falls.

Objectives

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • recall that every hospital should have a falls program
  • describe that all staff should know how to define what constitutes a fall, and how to measure the fall rate
  • explain that there are intrinsic and extrinsic causes of falls
  • recall that falls are one of the issues CMS will not pay for on Medicare patients if they occur during hospitalization and cause serious injury or death
  • discuss the issue of decreased mobility and how it can result in falls
