Session Overview: 
The presenter will review the updated community health needs assessment guidance and implementation strategy, along with tools and resources available for hospital use. We’ll also discuss innovative strategies to promote the health of individuals, communities and the patients hospitals serve. Attendees will learn the steps necessary to complete the CHNA and implementation strategy to ensure compliance with ACA and IRS guidelines.

Session Overview: 
According to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, “Health equity means that everyone has a fair and just opportunity to live as healthy as possible.” Using the power of data to identify health disparities among different groups within defined geographical areas is key to helping organizations understand and use a holistic approach to health equity and quality improvement strategy. The MHA Health Equity dashboards provide organizations with the information necessary to support health equity efforts that entail models of care and evidence-based measurement strategies that are key to helping them allocate the scarce resources where they are needed most.  

The presenter will give an overview of health disparities in Missouri and demonstrate the health equity dashboard, including how to interpret the data.

Session Overview: 
Hospitals’ health improvement work in the communities they serve can build a reputation and strengthen the power of a hospital or health system’s brand. This session will help you understand how to connect human stories to the investments hospitals make in community health to leverage the value for brand building.  

Dave Dillon, Missouri Hospital Association’s Vice President of Public and Media Relations has served as the association’s primary spokesperson since 2005. Before joining MHA, he served in a variety of roles in state government, including as a state agency executive and as a staff member for Missouri elected officials. He has worked on political campaigns at all levels throughout the nation, including on two gubernatorial elections in Missouri.  

Stephen Njenga, MPH, MHA, CPHQ, CPPS, LSSYB, is the Director of Quality Measurement and Population Health Improvement at the Missouri Hospital Association. He has worked in public health and health care for the last 19 years. Njenga coordinated the quality, population health and innovative model areas of the Medicare Rural Hospital Flexibility Program that serves all of Missouri’s critical access hospitals. He was a national recipient of the 2018 MBQIP Spirit Award for Innovation and Collaboration in the FLEX program. Through his leadership, the Missouri FLEX quality program received the 2016 national award for exemplary quality performance improvement on Emergency Department Transfer Communication measures. In his health care career, he has worked in the following areas: accreditation, quality management, patient safety, performance improvement and measurement, medical staff services, population and community health, and HIPAA privacy. He has a dual Bachelor of Science in biology and psychology from Drury University, a Master in Public Health with a specialization in epidemiology, and a second Master in Healthcare Administration, both from Missouri State University. He is a Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality, Certified Professional in Patient Safety and Certified in Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt. He serves on the National Rural Health Resource Center – Technical Assistance Support Center Advisory Board, Missouri Institute for Community Health Governing Board, #HealthierMO Executive Committee, Missouri Diabetes Council and DHSS Public Health System Partners Group.

Mat Reidhead, Vice President of Research and Analytics at the Hospital Industry Data Institute, the data company of the Missouri Hospital Association, has worked in health care analytics and research since July 2006. In this role, he has specialized in the development of risk-adjusted outcomes modeling with an emphasis on the role of social determinants of health for the purposes of empirical policy support, evaluative analyses and risk prediction. His work has placed MHA at the national forefront in readmissions research with a focus on SDOH. His work has been published in Medical Care, JAMA-Internal Medicine, Health Services Research, Health Affairs, The Journal of Public Health Management and Practice, New England Journal of Medicine-Catalyst, Modern Healthcare and Readmission News. 

He also specializes in small-area population health estimation, health policy analysis and prescriptive policy development with empirical support from various data sources. His focal areas have included Medicaid expansion, simulations of repeal and replace legislation, risk-adjustment for Medicare’s value-based purchasing policies and star ratings program. He also is the conceptual developer of the RWJF-funded Missouri ZIP Health Rankings project and lead designer of exploreMOhealth.org, a comprehensive community health needs assessment platform co-owned by MHA and the Missouri Foundation for Health.  

Before joining MHA in 2011, Reidhead was the health economist and performance improvement manager for DHSS. During this time, he conducted numerous special analyses for the state health director and governor, including econometric studies on the burden of disease in Missouri. He also helped to secure millions in new grant funding for the state under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. 

He received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts, both in economics from the University of Missouri-St. Louis in May 2006.
