Advance Directives: Ensuring Compliance with CMS and TJC — Virtual Event

Audience

chief medical officers, chief nursing officers, compliance officers, emergency department personnel, TJC coordinators, medical records staff, quality improvement personnel, risk managers and legal counsel

The following program content was provided by the speaker.

Overview

Advanced care planning involves making decisions about the care that patients want to receive if they become unable to speak for themselves. Both the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and The Joint Commission have requirements on advance directives for hospitals. The federal Patient Self-Determination Act addresses advance directives, and compliance is mandatory. It has been shown that better end-of-life care can reduce hospital readmissions.

This virtual event will discuss the CMS hospital Conditions of Participation and TJC standards on advance directives to help hospitals ensure compliance.

Objectives

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

    • describe the CMS CoPs requirements for advance directives for hospitals
    • identify TJC standards on advance directives
    • explain what is required under the Patient Self-Determination Act
    • discuss which patients must and should be given information on the hospital’s advance directive policies
