Audience

Any registered nurse or allied health employee serving as a preceptor in a health care setting. A preceptor is responsible for introducing students and/or new employees to the profession. Preceptors are responsible for orientation to policies, procedures and the dynamics of the clinical environment. Preceptors act as role models, educators, socializers, evaluators, protectors and eventually as mentors. Preceptors model new skills, observe and help the student or new employee with these skills, and evaluate competency.

Mission

Dedicated and competent preceptors are vital to the success of health care organizations and to the retention of health care professionals. Our mission is to take a proactive approach in the education and support of preceptors in the health care community.

Overview

Preceptors take on the vital role of orienting new staff to their roles, as well as onboarding new staff to the culture of the department and organization. The Missouri Preceptor Academy is designed to engage and grow current and future preceptors with key education tools and strategies to foster a strong preceptor/orientee relationship. This interactive program provides information and practical tools to improve preceptor abilities. As a preceptor, you can make a difference in how a new employee adjusts to your hospital.

Objectives

Kristine Hart L’Ecuyer, PhD, RN, CNL, CNE
Saint Louis University School of Nursing

Kristine Hart L’Ecuyer is an associate professor of nursing and the Associate Dean for Undergraduate and Pre-licensure students at the Trudy Busch Valentine School of Nursing at Saint Louis University. She is a graduate of the University of Missouri, the University of Alabama, Birmingham, and Saint Louis University. L’Ecuyer has been involved with preceptor education for more than 20 years as a hospital educator and as a faculty member working with undergraduate and graduate students and their preceptors.

Her clinical background includes critical care nursing of adult and pediatric thoracic and cardiothoracic patients, including heart and lung transplant recipients at the University of Missouri, the University of Alabama, and St. Mary’s Hospital in St. Louis. She has been on the faculty at Saint Louis University since 1993, teaching undergraduate medical-surgical clinicals, clinical capstone courses, advanced pathophysiology, and leadership, and she was formerly the director of the continuing nursing education department. Her research interests include preceptor issues, transition to practice, nursing students with learning disabilities, and interprofessional education and collaboration.

Accredited Continuing Education

Participants must attend the program in its entirety and complete an evaluation to receive a certificate of completion and continuing education contact hours.

In support of improving patient care, this activity has been planned and implemented by AXIS Medical Education and MHA Health Institute. For cancellations received in writing before the established deadline date, the registrant will receive a full refund — minus a $50* processing fee per registrant. After the deadline date, no refunds will be granted. Registrants not in attendance will be responsible for the full registration fee. Substitutions are encouraged. We reserve the right to cancel this program because of insufficient registration.

Program materials will be provided. Class size is limited. Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

A confirmation email will guarantee registration and include a link to a Myers-Briggs assessment that you must complete by the date indicated on your confirmation to receive the assessment at the preceptor academy for which you have registered.
