DHSS, CDC Confirm First Human Case Of Avian Influenza In Missouri

On Sept. 6, the DHSS and CDC confirmed the first human case of avian influenza in Missouri. The patient was hospitalized and treated with influenza viral medication and has been discharged. This also is the first case of H5N1 with no known occupational exposure.

All hospitals and health care providers are asked to remain vigilant for individuals with signs and symptoms of influenza who have been exposed to ill poultry, including backyard flocks, and dairy herds. For additional information on H5N1 Avian Flu, resources are available on the CDC, NETEC and MHA websites.

DHSS now is accepting applications for the Student Loan Repayment Program. This funding is for educational loan repayment to Missouri licensed and practicing psychiatric, medical and dental health professionals in exchange for service in Missouri areas with a shortage of mental health, medical and dental professionals. Recipients must put these funds toward their educational debt.

This funding is for educational loan repayment to eligible health care, mental health and public health professionals in exchange for service in Missouri areas with a shortage of health professionals. Recipients must put these funds toward their educational debt.
