Preventing Patient Falls

Audience

CMOs, CNOs, compliance officers, compliance officers, emergency department personnel, Joint Commission Coordinators, medical records staff, quality improvement personnel, risk managers and legal counsel

Overview

As the number one hospital-acquired condition and one of the most significant challenges for hospitals and other health care facilities, falls are an important patient safety and risk management issue. This virtual event will discuss how to comply with The Joint Commission and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services hospital Conditions of Participation standards on falls. This event also will include information on medications that increase the fall rate and the role of a pharmacist in the fall program.

Attendance is a must for anyone serving on the falls team, as well as anyone interested in preventing and reducing the number of falls in the hospital setting. All hospitals should have a falls team that receives current information regarding falls.

Objectives

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • explain that every hospital should have a falls program
  • describe that all staff should know how to measure the fall rate and define what constitutes a fall
  • define the intrinsic and extrinsic causes of falls
  • recall that CMS will not pay for falls experienced by Medicare patients if the fall occurs during hospitalization and causes serious injury or death
  • recite evidence-based fall assessment tools used in inpatient and outpatient settings
