CMS previously released proposed payment and policy updates to the federal fiscal year 2023 Medicare acute Inpatient and Long-Term Care Hospital Prospective Payment Systems. MHA has published an issue brief with additional details.

HHS released public data about mergers, acquisitions, consolidations and changes of ownership from 2016 through 2022. According to the ASPE report, changes of ownership were much more common in nursing homes than hospitals, the majority of SNFs that were purchased have a single owner and states exhibit wide variation in ownership. CMS expects to release updated data on a quarterly basis. According to HHS, “this data is a powerful new tool for researchers, state and federal enforcement agencies, and the public to better understand the impacts of consolidation on health care prices and quality of care.”
