Hospital Industry Data Institute

The Hospital Industry Data Institute is the data company of the Missouri Hospital Association. A comprehensive, hospital-founded organization, HIDI collects, analyzes and disseminates data about hospitals. HIDI reports include inpatient and outpatient statistics, utilization rates, financial and management indicators and combinations of data provided as special requests.

The standard format for all reports is Adobe Acrobat portable document format files on CD-ROM. The PDF files contain all the documents included in the printed reports. Users can view individual reports and print selected pages or the entire document. In addition, the data are available on the CD in an ASCII comma-delimited format that users can load into Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access or other database software for easy analysis. Member hospitals can request printed copies of reports on a fee-for-service basis.

Data Available To MHA-Member Hospitals

  • Hospital Inpatient Reports
These reports contain comprehensive information concerning hospital utilization patterns and patient characteristics and are valuable tools for hospital planning and evaluation. Available since 1986, the reports are mailed to member hospitals that provide inpatient discharge data. Beginning with the 2000 Hospital Inpatient Reports, inpatient discharge data for Missouri and Kansas are combined and reported at the hospital level. Participating Missouri hospitals may purchase reports for Kansas, and participating Kansas hospitals may purchase reports for Missouri. In 2003, the utilization rate tables for Missouri were added to the CD as a convenience to members. The tables report the 500 most frequent principal diagnoses, the 500 most frequent principal procedures and all diagnosis-related groups (DRG).

  • Interim Hospital Inpatient Reports
These patient origin reports have been available since 1986 and are mailed automatically to participating hospitals that submit inpatient discharge data.

  • Hospital Outpatient Reports
These reports contain comprehensive information concerning utilization patterns and patient characteristics for hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers and are valuable tools for hospital planning and evaluation. The reports are mailed to participating member hospitals who provide outpatient discharge data.

  • Census Data
Offered since 1986, these reports provide census estimates and projections for the United States, including state, county and ZIP code-level data for Missouri and contiguous states. Reports also include Missouri metropolitan and micropolitan statistical areas and contiguous counties.

  • Management and Productivity Reports
Available since 1986, these reports provide comparative financial, management and productivity information on a quarterly basis. Comparisons are available by peer group, region, hospital size and case-mix index. Missouri hospitals complete a management and productivity survey and receive reports with numerous comparative options.

  • Executive Compensation Report
This annual Executive Compensation Report, compiled by the Hospital Industry Data Institute for the Missouri Hospital Association, contains compensation information for eight executive-level job classifications. Survey results are reported for members of the Missouri Hospital Association and the St. Louis Metropolitan Hospital Council. The survey is mailed in January to member hospitals and health systems.

  • Monthly Utilization Report
The Monthly Utilization Report provides information on hospitals’ utilization by specialty area, general payer classification, emergency department and outpatient services. Survey data are submitted to HIDI electronically by the 25th of the month following the reporting month. The MUR is returned electronically to participating hospitals 10 days later, giving the most current picture of health care utilization available in the state.

Data Available For A Fee

  • Average Hospital Charges for Medicare Patients — DRG Report
The Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MEDPAR) file, available from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, is the source of data for this report. The report provides hospital-specific average ancillary charges and total charges for Medicare patients for a $200 fee. Hospital chief executive officers are notified by mail and are sent an order form when the annual data are available.

  • Custom Data Files and Reports
Member hospitals can request aggregate or patient-level information on a fee-for-service basis. Custom reports are available in either electronic or printed formats. Recipients may select from data elements that are available in the “limited data set” described in the regulations of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996.
