Overview

This virtual event will discuss the new interpretative guidelines for QAPI that were published in March 2023, the QAPI program CoPs for critical access hospitals that were effective March 30, 2021, and the changes made to the CoPs for general acute hospitals that went into effect Nov. 29, 2019. This is one of three conditions of participation for which CMS has published a worksheet to guide surveyors through the process to determine whether hospitals comply with this condition.

Objectives

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • discuss the board's responsibility for the QAPI program
  • explain changes to the general acute hospital QAPI standards and interpretative guidelines
  • explain the basic requirements for an effective QAPI program
  • review the QAPI worksheet so staff understand surveyor expectations

Speaker

Nancy Ruzicka is a consultant on state and federal rules, regulations and interpretative guidelines. Ruzicka previously worked as director of integrity and compliance and privacy official at MercyOne Des Moines and director of regulatory compliance at UnityPoint Health-Des Moines. She also has more than 20 years of experience with the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals. Ruzicka holds master’s degrees in health law and business administration and a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy, all from Drake University. She is certified in health care compliance and maintains her Iowa pharmacy license.
