As we enter the Labor Day weekend in 2021, I am reminded of a bible chapter — Ecclesiastes 3. This well-known section was, in part, captured in the song Turn! Turn! Turn!, by The Byrds. However, a later verse in the same chapter gives me inspiration for organizations during these difficult times.

“And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is the gift of God.”

These are difficult days for our hospitals and the individuals who serve on our teams. There are shortages of staff, and shortages of hope. We will overcome these challenges — both the immediate and future.

No matter your plans for the weekend, take a moment to pause and reflect on your labors throughout the last 18 months. As a community of hospitals, and as compassionate caregivers, we have served and saved many. This weekend, and in the weeks ahead, that work will continue.

COVID-19 will subside, and we will get to the work of strengthening our organizations for the future. We will persevere. Ecclesiastes 3, verse 1 is a reminder.

“To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.”

Have a happy, healthy and safe Labor Day.  And, as always, feel free to share your thoughts.
