MHA issued a memo regarding electronic prescribing for controlled substances. In 2019, the Missouri General Assembly passed Senate Bill 514 requiring electronic prescriptions for controlled substances. The effective date of the law is Jan. 1, 2021. Although MHA recently received some conflicting information on the implementation timeline, it appears the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services will be moving forward with rules to implement 195.550, RSMo.

The Missouri Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs issued a memo on the potential impact of proposed emergency medical services rules from the Drug Enforcement Agency. The BNDD noted the proposed EMS rules should have minimal impact on Missouri EMS providers as the state already has most of the proposal already in place.

Hospitals choosing to submit second quarter 2020 data for the Inpatient Quality Reporting, Outpatient Quality Reporting and Hospital-Acquired Condition Reduction programs are reminded of the following deadlines.
On March 27, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced that all providers are excepted from the reporting of IQR Program measure data for the November 2020 submission deadline covering the April 1 through June 30, 2020, discharges. However, CMS still encourages all participating hospitals to submit data if possible.

Now available on the QualityNet website is the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Abstraction and Reporting Tool Inpatient Version 4.25.3. This version is a patch needed to update the allowable values in question 44 of the CART application related to third and fourth quarter 2020 discharges to support version 5.8 of the Specifications Manual for National Hospital Inpatient Quality Measures.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services hosts its COVID-19 Office Hours Call twice a month on Tuesdays to provide hospitals, health systems and providers with an opportunity to ask questions regarding CMS’ temporary actions. Drew DeWitt was named medical center director of John J. Pershing VA Medical Center in Poplar Bluff, Mo., effective Oct. 25. DeWitt most recently served as deputy director of VA Portland Health Care System in Portland, Ore., and has served in various roles with the VA since 2004. He replaces Paul Hopkins who was serving as interim medical center director since April 2020.
