Perinatal Bereavement Committee, Progress West Hospital

When a pregnancy ends in loss, it is devastating and requires a unique approach. Last year, the Women’s Service Department formed the Perinatal Bereavement Committee to better support families experiencing perinatal loss. By combining skill sets, we have been able to accomplish so much more than as individuals. We have been able to fulfill our goals of finding ways to maximize interactions with the baby while creating memories and validating the parental role.

The care and compassion exhibited by this 15-person team is second to none. These nurses have donated their personal time and supplies to provide each mother with a stuffed bear that is customized to weigh the exact same as her baby at delivery. This ensures that no mother leaves with empty arms. Our most recent project involves working to create a memorial garden for families to visit to honor the life of their child. I am excited for what else this team will do.

More than 90 individuals and teams were nominated by their peers for going above and beyond to care for the communities they serve every day. Champions of Care winners, as well as all who were nominated, are featured on MHA’s website in stories submitted by their peers.
