DHSS Issues Health Alert Regarding Xylazine
CDC Issues Health Update On Potential Risk For New Mpox Cases
Center For Behavioral Health – Maryland Heights Names Administrator
Staff Spotlight: Stephanie Buker
DHSS has detected a sharp increase in deaths related to xylazine, a veterinary medicine used as a sedative and muscle relaxant. From 2021 to 2022, there has been a 180% increase in fatalities, with two-thirds of those deaths occurring in adults between the ages of 25 and 44. The alert summarizes DHSS’ public education, counseling and treatment recommendations.
The CDC issued a health update on the potential risk for new mpox (formerly monkeypox) cases. Cases have declined since peaking in August 2022, but the CDC continues to receive reports of cases and ongoing transmission. From late April to early May, 12 confirmed cases and one probable case of mpox were reported in Chicago. The update notes to contact DHSS with questions, to report a case of mpox, to request use of TPOXX for a patient or to request mpox testing at the state public health lab.
Laura Outlaw has been named the Administrator of Center for Behavioral Health – Maryland Heights. She replaces Jennifer Steurer who has been serving as the interim administrator of the hospital since February.
