DHSS finalized requirements surrounding the Essential Caregiver Program. The proposed rule was published in the Oct. 17, 2022, Missouri Register. The final order of rulemaking is published in the Wednesday, Feb. 1, edition without change. Hospitals should have an Essential Caregiver Program outlining visitation in the event of a state of emergency declared pursuant to Chapter 44, RSMo, relating to infectious, contagious, communicable or dangerous diseases.

The FDA Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee met on Thursday to discuss the future of COVID-19 vaccinations. The committee unanimously voted to update all vaccines used for mRNA vaccination to the bivalent strain that currently is used in mRNA booster shots, changing primary series from vaccines containing only the original strain. The committee was supportive of the FDA plan to convene the group annually to determine if new strains should be used for the COVID-19 vaccine ahead of a fall vaccination schedule. The FDA and CDC must sign off on this change before it goes into effect.

Veterans in suicidal crises now can go to any health care facility, at the VA or in the community, for free emergency health care, which includes transportation costs, inpatient or crisis residential care for as many as 30 days, and outpatient follow-up care for 90 days, including social work. The VA will provide or pay for treatment of eligible individuals.
