Pediatric COVID-19 Cases In Missouri Continue Alarming Trajectory

Staff Contact: Mat Reidhead or Jackie Gatz

Last year between mid-April and mid-September, nearly 8,800 Missouri children ages 17 and younger received a positive result for COVID-19 using both diagnostic and serological tests. During the same period this year, more than 40,000 Missouri children have tested positive — a 4.6-fold difference. The 2020 calendar year ended with 44,366 pediatric cases that largely were driven by surges associated with the start of the school year followed closely thereafter by the holiday season. This year between April and September, the state already has added more than 40,000 pediatric cases, more than 90% of Missouri’s 2020 total in just five months. Using a simple linear projection of the weekly rates of growth in pediatric cases last year scaled by current levels in 2021 suggest the state could see more than 200,000 cases among children 17 and younger by the end of the year.

Despite nearly one in three Missouri children ages 12 to 17 having completed vaccination against COVID-19, the dominant Delta variant has resulted in this month holding the top two record days in terms of new pediatric COVID-19 cases. Additionally, the largest increases have been among younger children not yet eligible for the vaccines.

Fortunately, emergency use authorization of the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine for children ages five to 11 is expected next month, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration stands ready to carefully examine the new trial data for safety and efficacy. Until that time, the best protective strategies for Missouri’s children include masking indoors; practicing hand hygiene; physical distancing; and being surrounded by family, friends and teachers who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. For the latest data on COVID-19 cases among children in Missouri by school district, see the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services School District dashboard, jointly developed by MHA, the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, and the Missouri School Boards’ Association.
