August COVID-19 ICU Admissions Surpass Winter Peaks — Spotlight On Southeast Missouri

Staff Contact: Mat Reidhead or Jackie Gatz

The efficiency with which the dominant Delta variant of the SARs-CoV-2 coronavirus moves through susceptible communities, in addition to the speed of progression in the acuity of patients hospitalized with the variant, have resulted in record levels of ICU patients in Missouri during late August. The rates of doubling among suspected and confirmed COVID-19 inpatient and ICU admissions have been most pronounced in the state’s Southeast Region. Since June, COVID-19 hospitalizations in the region have increased from a daily average census of seven to 141 — a 2,032% relative increase over just eight weeks — while ICU admissions in the region increased nearly 5,000% during the same period.

Last week, Gov. Parson announced new funding for regional monoclonal antibody infusion sites to assuage mounting pressure on hospitals across the state. The mAb treatment is a synthetic protein that attaches to spike proteins in the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which prevents COVID-19 from attaching itself to and attacking the body’s healthy cells. The treatment currently is authorized for emergency use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and has demonstrated effectiveness in preventing severe illness, hospitalization and death. Additional information on the mAb therapies and the new infusion sites are available on the MHA website.
