Pharmacy Conditions of Participation — Virtual Event

Audience

compliance officers, nurse leaders, patient safety employees, performance improvement personnel, pharmacists, physicians, risk management staff and quality improvement personnel

Overview

This session will provide information about the recent changes in Medicare’s Conditions of Participation, which require hospitals to establish a formalized antibiotic stewardship program. Participants also will review the existing CoPs and problematic pharmacy standards.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ interpretive guidelines address medication management and pharmacy-related standards. Similarly, medication management is being addressed by The Joint Commission as medication errors account for the largest number of medical errors in health care and are the most common reason for unnecessary hospital readmissions. For the first time, CMS mentions that nursing staff should be aware of pharmacy standards. This includes medication errors, adverse events, drug incompatibilities, self‐administered medication and required medication policies.

Objectives

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • describe CMS requirements for pharmaceutical services
  • describe minimum security requirements
  • explain basic required policies and procedures
  • explain patient safety measures for medications
