Overview

This session will focus on the identification of common construction-related risks and how best to mitigate them. Drawing upon decades of experience, the presentation will include real-world examples of construction failures and how best to avoid them.

Objectives

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

    • identify common challenges during construction within a health care facility
    • describe how to perform better risk assessments and create mitigation plans
    • explain the development of monitoring and documentation plans

Steve Spaanbroek is a founding partner of MSL Healthcare Partners, Inc., and has more than 28 years of national consulting experience in the Environment of Care™ and facilities management. He is a frequent speaker in the field of health care safety, regulatory compliance, and performance improvement. Spaanbroek served as a Faculty Member for the American Society for Healthcare Engineering of the American Hospital Association, teaching both the Healthcare Construction Certificate and Environment of Care courses. Spaanbroek was an active faculty member from 2004 to 2021 and has participated in seminar development for Purdue University, the Association of Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology and The Joint Commission.

Spaanbroek has served on several ASHE committees, including Advocacy, Customer Relations, Facilities Management, and Education. Spaanbroek received his Bachelor of Science degree in Construction Management from East Carolina University, Greenville, NC, where he also earned a Master of Business Administration degree with a concentration in health care.
