The MHA Health Institute, in collaboration with Executive Speakers Bureau and more than 30 state hospital associations, is excited to present this seven-part virtual speaker series for MHA-member hospital executive leaders. Every other Thursday from June to Sept., join nationally renowned experts to discuss the COVID-19 pandemic and learn from their expertise in resiliency, health policy, financial and strategic planning, unconscious bias, health equity, and the new healthcare ecosystem.

In this session, Gloria Goins, former chief diversity and inclusion officer for Bon Secours Mercy Health System, will discuss practical actions that can be taken to reduce the effects of unconscious bias in healthcare operations. The outcomes of unconscious bias can be seen across all industries; however, in healthcare, mitigating unconscious bias is of particular importance. Recognized as one of Becker’s Hospital Review 15 chief diversity officers in healthcare and founder and chair of the Georgetown Chief Diversity Officers’ Roundtable, Goins will share her expertise regarding evidence-based impacts of unconscious bias on safety, quality and mortality and how the healthcare industry is unintentionally putting patients at risk. Cross-cultural competency is a “must have” skill as we define what it means to address, support and manage the everchanging U.S. population, particularly as the world faces the effects of COVID-19.

With an aging global demographic that will put more than half of the world’s population in the 60+ age group by 2060, the world’s real healthcare crisis has barely begun. The problem is not advances in medicine, the threat of future pandemics, or our ability to develop new pharmaceuticals and therapies. Greater challenges come from a healthcare ecosystem that pits payor against provider and encourages gaming of the system, poorlyorchestrated supply chains, and the enormous administrative burden on providers. Business visionary Tom Koulopoulos, chairman of the Boston-based global futures think tank Delphi Group, will explain the need to refocus every part of the healthcare ecosystem on what it is best at.
