This webinar will focus on setting specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely goals, as well as determining action steps to achieve results related to the American Organization for Nursing Leadership competencies of communication, knowledge, leadership, professionalism and business skills. This presentation is for aspiring nurse leaders, new nurse leaders and nurse leader mentors. Participants will be encouraged to develop at least two goals with action steps and to share this information for increased accountability.


At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

  • identify three benefits of setting and achieving SMART goals
  • list two areas for growth in personal leadership based on the AONL leadership competencies
  • determine two SMART goals related to these growth opportunities
  • develop several specific action steps for at least one of these goals
  • practice accountability conversation around goals, action steps and achievement


Meda Bower worked for the Saint Luke’s Health System for more than 14 years and recently retired. She has been in health care with an education focus her entire career. She started as a clinical dietitian working with nephrology patients, and then went into nursing with a focus in cardiology and internal medicine. Bower’s management and leadership experience includes leading the Saint Luke's Health System Organization Development and Talent Management Department and managing clinical education, a diabetes center, a disease and wellness center, and the Henry Ford Hospital Dietetic Internship. Bower is passionate about leadership, mentoring, working within your strengths and loving work.

Bower has a Bachelor of Science degree in home economics with a dietetics specialization from Southwest Missouri State University, a master’s degree in allied health education from Mercy College in Detroit, and a Bachelor of Nursing from Wayne State University in Detroit. Bower also works with Kansas City Metropolitan Healthcare Council teaching Vital Smarts Workshops, including Crucial Conversations, Crucial Accountability, Influencer and Getting Things Done.

Participants must attend the program in its entirety and complete an evaluation to receive a certificate of completion and continuing education contact hours.
