This two-day workshop will focus on the role of the charge nurse, whether new or seasoned. Leadership styles, conflict resolution, effective communication, time management and successful delegation are just a few of the topics that will be discussed. Though catering to the role of the charge nurse, the workshop also will benefit nurse leaders looking to improve their leadership skills.


Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • identify the essential leadership traits for a charge nurse
  • examine why the charge nurse is important in setting a positive tone
  • identify the dynamics of the “leadership continuum” on delegating
  • examine how to effectively problem solve challenges that a charge nurse experiences through the use of case studies
  • develop an understanding of why becoming a better listener and speaker is important to achieving excellence in communication
  • identify common behaviors that are difficult for a leader with which to deal and the possible intent behind them
  • develop strategies for dealing with difficult behaviors and resolving conflict
  • discuss how to talk to someone even if you are stressed, hurt, scared, frustrated, insulted, betrayed or desperate
  • discover five ways of “being” that are essential to effective leadership
  • analyze practical strategies for managing a leader’s personal attitude and how it influences their followers
  • explore the principles of situational leadership and relate how they affect leadership style
  • discuss leadership and coaching in actual situations at work
  • discuss how to assess personal stress levels
  • identify ways to form a more reflective nursing practice

Elizabeth Larson currently is focused on developing and supporting education for nursing leadership. As an independent consultant, she spent the last decade presenting programs to support leadership on the frontline of health care. She has a working partnership with chapters of the American Hospital Association to bring this programming to a broader, nationwide audience.

Larson has more than 40 years of experience in health care, including acute care settings as a clinician and manager. She has 20 years of experience in the delivery and management of adult education, including instructional design, adult learning theories, competency-based learning, technology-based learning, and leadership and management of education services.

Continuing Education

Participants must attend the program in its entirety and complete an evaluation to receive a certificate of completion and continuing education contact hours.
