This seminar is being offered at a reduced registration fee to MHA-member hospitals thanks to a generous contribution from the MHA Management Services Corporation. This webinar also is eligible for use of the MHA Health Institute coupon. Note: Coupons were mailed to MHA-member hospital CEOs in December 2019.

This seminar is eligible for discounted registration. When a hospital registers more than three individuals, each registration above three is reduced by $100 per person. The discount is not available for online registration. Purpose

This two-day course will set the groundwork and beyond for nurses who aspire to be leaders in the profession. The course will allow for self-analysis of leadership strengths and opportunities for improvement in areas of emotional intelligence, communication techniques, team building, conflict resolution, and self-care and development. It also will examine change readiness and evaluate what it takes to persevere as a nurse leader.


Objectives

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • identify essential attributes of a nurse leader
  • recognize leadership strengths and opportunities through discussion and self-reflection
  • assess change readiness and describe how to be an effective change agent
  • identify two approaches to build trust and increase collaboration
  • compare and contrast effective versus ineffective communication techniques
  • discuss benefits and barriers to effective delegation
  • demonstrate effective feedback techniques
  • recognize the importance of team-building skills, and ways to motivate and actively engage self and others
  • develop strategies to deal with conflicts both internal and external
  • determine Emotional Intelligence strengths and opportunities
  • develop a personal action plan for improvement
  • discuss with leadership panel strategies for dealing with current challenges in the workplace
  • identify the “why” behind the reason you became a nurse...and a leader
  • formulate actions to increase leadership skills
  • discuss the importance of developing “GRIT” as a survival technique in nursing and leadership
  • construct a plan to care for “self” in order to better care for others
  • assess and compare the “legacy” you have to the one you want to leave

Cheryle M. Kelly, MSN, R.N.

Cheryle Kelly has a passion for advocating for nurses to not only succeed but also to love the profession they have chosen. Her professional experiences span diverse clinical and leadership settings/roles at multiple levels. She has a proven record of success demonstrated by leadership, mentoring, team building and quality of care. She also has taught in both associate and bachelor’s degree nursing programs, and she developed and facilitated a “best in practice” hospital-based new graduate nurse internship program. Kelly’s leadership style is to teach, coach, nurture and inspire the future of nursing. She is highly motivated to make a difference one nurse or one room full of nurses at a time.

Participants must attend the program in its entirety and complete an evaluation to receive a certificate of completion and continuing education contact hours.
