Audience

Individuals who will be involved with The Joint Commission surveys are encouraged to attend. CEOs, medical executives, nurse executives, quality coordinators, financial officers, education coordinators, information managers and human resources managers also will find the program beneficial.


Purpose

Welcome your Joint Commission surveyors with confidence. This two-day program serves as an annual update to The Joint Commission accreditation process, requirements, changes and current challenges for hospitals. Essential elements of the requirements, as well as enhanced discussion regarding the most challenging and urgent accreditation issues, will be presented.


Objectives

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • describe the key areas for the hospital and critical access hospitals survey process for 2019
  • review the impact of SAFER Matrix scoring on survey decisions
  • list the 2019 National Patient Safety Goals and challenges for compliance
  • discuss the intent and key concepts in TJC requirements chapters
  • identify frequent and challenging findings with TJC requirements, including high-risk processes for condition-level deficiencies
  • describe implementation strategies and suggestions to improve compliance with TJC requirements

Steven Chinn has more than 25 years of clinical and management experience in community health, behavioral health and academic medical centers, as well as ambulatory care and managed health care settings. Chinn's consulting skills for ambulatory, acute care and network organization lie in the areas of organizational assessment, survey preparation, performance improvement, managed care, medical staff, human resources and staff competency, and business development. He also serves as a Joint Commission Resources faculty member for the Department of Education and is involved with educational presentations for hospitals, ambulatory and network accreditation standards, performance improvement, patient safety, and medical staff issues.

Kathy Eichner has more than 29 years of health care experience, which includes case management, regulatory compliance, collaborative pathways, clinical outcomes improvement and access management. She is a certified Joint Commission Yellow Belt and Change Agent. Eichner has presented extensively in the areas of performance improvement, accreditation readiness, clinical outcomes, core measures and hospital operations.


Continuing Education

Participants must attend the program in its entirety to receive a certificate of completion and continuing education contact hours.

The Joint Commission is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the health care team.

ACHE:
The Joint Commission is authorized to award 11.75 hours of pre-approved ACHE Qualified Education credit for this program toward advancement, or recertification, in the American College of Healthcare Executives. Participants in this program wishing to have the continuing education hours applied toward ACHE Qualified Education credit should indicate their attendance when submitting an application to the American College of Healthcare Executives for advancement or recertification.
