  • discuss the development and evidenced-based practices of the in-house curriculum for crisis management in a high security setting
  • identify the diverse strategies that were incorporated in the teaching of the new training, including trauma informed care
  • discuss the key methods of assessment and documentation at intake to assist with strengthening the acute need for admission
  • describe methods to quickly demonstrate and initiate active treatment

Terence Bostic worked as an internal consultant in an academic medical setting before joining the CMA team. Trained in both clinical and industrial/organizational psychology, he holds a Bachelor of Science from The College of William and Mary, a Master of Science from Bucknell University, and a Doctorate from Saint Louis University.

He is a licensed psychologist in Missouri and is repeatedly published as the principle author in international, peer-reviewed journals on issues of stress management, personal resiliency and psychological wellbeing. He also is a member of the American Psychological Association, the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and the Society for Consulting Psychology.

Amy Dee has more than 20 years of experience as a professional motivational speaker. Based in the Midwest, she has earned a national reputation for keynotes, closing programs and breakout sessions featuring her signature brand of side-splitting humor to explain how to harness the science of behavior and remember their power to choose everything from how they deal with difficult people at work to how they maintain positive relationships at home.

Russel DeTrempe has over 30 years’ experience at Fulton State Hospital in various positions, including Social Work, administration and being the chairperson of the crisis management review committee that developed and implemented a new approach at FSH in aggressive client situations. He currently is the director of the Biggs Maximum Security Unit and is leading efforts for security consolidation into the new Nixon Forensic Center. Fulton State Hospital is the oldest mental health facility west of the Mississippi, employs over 1,200 staff and is a 400 bed forensic center.

Richard Grindstaff has been working for DHSS for more than 12 years. He started his nursing career in acute care, which included emergency room, ICU and psychiatrics. Grindstaff was a long-term care surveyor for more than 12 years. In 2016, he was promoted to Chief of the Bureau of Hospital Standards, overseeing regulations and licensure of all hospitals in the state of Missouri.

Dayna Harbin is an experienced psychiatric nurse with over 30 years in the mental health field. She is a certified psychiatric and mental health nurse. Harbin has served in leadership positions in the acute care hospital setting for most of her career. She currently is the administrative director for psychiatric services at CoxHealth in Springfield, Mo.

Alyson Wysong-Harder has worked in the health care, behavioral health care, community-based and private sector since 1997. She began her career in Arkansas, Texas and Colorado and returned to Missouri in 2000 to focus on rural health care. Wysong-Harder is committed to strategic and systemic improvements to health care, behavioral health care and education through integrative and coordinative care approaches. Her primary commitment is to assist our most vulnerable populations through ensuring access to care and empowering change.

Cathy Lander-Goldberg is a licensed clinical social worker at St. Louis Behavioral Medicine Institute who works with individuals and groups in an outpatient mental health setting. Lander-Goldberg often incorporates expressive therapy techniques such as journaling, photography and art into her work with clients. She has more than 25 years’ experience conducting expressive workshops in a variety of settings throughout the Midwest, including psychiatric hospitals, schools for at-risk youth, residential treatment programs and community centers. She is the author of the workbook, “PHOTO EXPLORATIONS: A Girl's Guide to Self-Discovery Through Photography, Writing and Drawing.” Lander-Goldberg also is a professional photographer and the curator of the traveling photo and literary exhibit, The RESILIENT SOULS PROJECT, which celebrates inner strength. She holds a master’s degree in social work from Washington University in St. Louis and a bachelor's degree in photo-journalism from the University of Missouri in Columbia.

Ivan Miller is a professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior in the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and director of the Psychosocial Research Program at Butler Hospital. He also co-directs the Brown University Center for Suicide Research. Mill has been continuously funded by the National Institute of Mental Health for the past 35 years to conduct research developing and evaluating treatments for severe depression and suicidal behavior. Miller is the author of more than 270 papers and books relating to depression and suicide.

Robin Pendleton has over 15 years of experience at Fulton State Hospital in various positions, including forensic rehabilitation specialist, security officer and mental health instructor. He most currently served as lead training technician for staff development, developing and implementing training that is delivered annually to over 1,200 staff.

Tammy Smiley has worked at Fulton State Hospital for 21 years and served in a variety of positions, including program director, social work supervisor and team leader. She has served as a member of the core team that developed the SMART model for handling aggressive situations.

Scott Zeller is CEP America’s vice president of acute psychiatry. He is the former chief of psychiatric emergency services of the Alameda Health System in Oakland, Calif., and in his 29 years in Emergency Psychiatry, he has personally cared for over 80,000 patients. Dr. Zeller is an assistant clinical professor at both the University of California-Riverside and Touro University medical schools, and he is past-president of the American Association for Emergency Psychiatry. He is the author of multiple textbooks and numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, and he lectures internationally as a keynote speaker. He led development of both the USA and International Guidelines on Evaluation of Treatment of Agitation and has published research on innovative designs for emergency mental health care, which he also has helped to implement in multiple centers. These works led to his being named the National Council on Behavioral Health's 2015 USA Doctor of the Year. Dr. Zeller is known as a leading expert in psychiatric emergencies across the nation and around the world.
