Facilitation skills are essential to effective collaboration. This workshop will help participants understand the facilitator’s role in ensuring successful meeting outcomes, with special focus on improving productivity in the emergency management environment. Course material will be discussed in the context of conducting hazard-vulnerability analyses, facilitating exercises, and leading safety and preparedness meetings. This workshop is a must-attend for all emergency managers.


Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • describe the powerful link between good facilitation and group performance
  • define the role of a facilitator before, during and after a meeting
  • describe the importance of establishing desired outcomes for any meeting
  • use a set of process tools to keep meetings on track
  • describe how to apply techniques for handling disruptive behaviors in meetings
  • describe how to use Destra’s model for moving a group through idea generation to decision making
  • select the best decision-making method for a given situation
  • use a set of six powerful facilitation skills for effective idea generation, prioritization and assessment of potential solutions

Ayre’s experience reflects a varied background, including supporting the three-year development and roll out of the Kaiser Permanente Improvement Institute, acting as thought partner with an educational reform foundation that is reimagining Colorado public education, and working with multiple government organizations on public engagement and communication strategy.

Don Krohn has spent his career in both the clinical field and in performance improvement. He is responsible for managing transformation through organization wide training and consulting resources applying Lean Six Sigma, Change Management, Project Management and Rational Thinking Processes. Krohn is a certified trainer in Kepner-Tregoe’s Rational Thinking Processes and is Destra-trained in Accelerating Change and Transitions, as well as Facilitation Skills for Leaders. He has a master’s degree in adult clinical psychology from SIU Edwardsville and business administration from Webster University.

Continuing Education

A certificate for 11.25 clock hours of attendance will be awarded. Clock hours may be applied toward CHEP re-certification. Participants must attend the program in its entirety and complete an evaluation to receive continuing education credits.
