Audience

NEW infection prevention professionals — less than two years in profession


Purpose

This conference will prepare new infection prevention health care professionals to be facilitators and resources for surveillance, prevention and control of infections. It will aid professionals new to the responsibilities of infection prevention in managing the everyday duties of infection surveillance, analysis of disease data, problem identification and resolution. This program will benefit acute, long-term, residential, ambulatory care, public health, rehabilitation, home health and mental health disciplines. It will enhance existing programs through a presentation of current guidelines and evidence-based practices applicable to infection control programs, product selection and evaluation. This conference allows participants to engage in hands-on case study group review activities and applications of user-friendly tools to enhance their infection prevention programs and goals.


Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the program, participants will be able to:

  • discuss health care pathogens and multi-resistant organisms
  • discuss various infection prevention tools such as the IC plan, risk assessment and ICRA
  • discuss the principles of sterilization and disinfection
  • discuss employee health protocols for preventing and responding to employee health and safety issues
  • discuss the National Healthcare Safety Network and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services reporting requirements and NHSN definitions
  • identify the chain of infection cycle and isolation principles and precautions
  • review the recommended and required surveillance activities to reduce and prevent HAIs

Faculty

Robert Geist is an advanced epidemiologist serving the health care associated infections and antimicrobial resistance program, and the Infectious Disease Eepidemiology Response Group at the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. Geist joined the state health department in 2010, during the initial implementation of the state’s HAI program. In 2012, he became board certified in infection control, and in 2016, was honored to become a Fellow of the Association of Professionals in Infection Control.

Vicky Ferris is a registered nurse, infection preventionist and consultant. She has diverse work experience in implementing infection control programs in community hospitals, academic medical centers and long-term care. Ferris is certified in infection control and is pursuing fellowship in infection prevention. She is active in her local APIC chapter and national infection prevention programs. Ferris is currently a partner in a health care consulting company.

Linda Merz received an associate degree in medical laboratory science from Southwestern Illinois College and went on to graduate from Webster University with a bachelor’s degree in medical technology. She has 17 years of microbiology experience and has been working in infection prevention and control at St. Anthony's Medical Center since 2004. Linda became certified in infection prevention and control in 2008.

Jo Micek is a registered nurse, infection preventionist and consultant. Her work experience includes oversight of acute care, home health, long-term care and clinics. Micek has maintained certification in infection control since 1988. She is active in APIC activities on a local, state and national level.

Jan Wesselman has more than 35 years of experience developing and managing large hospital employee health programs and working with IPAC on post-exposure management.


Continuing Education

Participants must attend the program in its entirety and complete an evaluation to receive a certificate of completion and continuing education contact hours.
