Earthquake Summit Addresses Health Care, Community Impacts

Staff Contact: Carissa Van Hunnik or Stacie Hollis

Earthquake Summit Last week, more than 450 emergency management professionals throughout Missouri’s southeast region attended the 2nd Annual Earthquake Summit in Poplar Bluff. The summit, a multidisciplinary event cohosted by several agencies, provided participants with the latest geological findings in the New Madrid Seismic Zone, as well as preparedness strategies and guidance on recovery following an earthquake. The New Madrid Seismic Zone remains an active and catastrophic threat to Missouri’s infrastructure. Just this morning, Malden, Mo., experienced a 2.7 magnitude earthquake.

At the Summit, MHA and its Nonurban Missouri Healthcare Coalition sponsored a presentation by Stephanie Meeks, Emergency Management & Regulatory Compliance Manager at Ridgecrest Regional Hospital in the state of California, to share incident impacts and lessons learned following the 2019 series of earthquakes in the region. A recording of the presentations is available.
