In July 2019, MHA engaged health care staff from Missouri hospitals for a program focused on achieving bold aims for patients in a safe care environment. Recognizing the interdependencies of the care team — the patient, their family and the caregivers — resulted in the following takeaway: We must empower and support our health care workers to engage their patients to achieve optimum health. These interdependencies, however, are challenged by the continued prevalence of workplace violence within the care setting. Without a resilient workforce, hospital efforts to improve the health of their patients will be diminished.
While progress has been made in mitigation, incidents of workplace violence remain prevalent in hospitals and clinics. The 2019 MHA Preparedness and Safety Assessment found that 48 percent of hospitals report workplace violence or violent intruders as one of their top three internal risks. The assessment further validates that hospitals are investing in necessary mitigation strategies.
Despite ongoing efforts to mitigate violence against health care workers, work continues to fully achieve safe care environments. Read the September 2019 issue of Trajectories for a closer look at the progress in Missouri, as well as strategies for prevention and mitigation.

The National Rural Health Resource Center released the rural hospital guide to improving care management. The guide presents current best practices in care management, and provides an understanding of the care management capabilities and competencies an organization must develop or procure to transition successfully from fee-for-service reimbursement to value-based payment.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services engaged Mathematica to develop, re-evaluate and maintain behavioral health measures used in the Inpatient Psychiatric Facility Quality Reporting program and several other CMS-reporting and payment programs. Nominations are being accepted for the technical expert panel being formed to gain stakeholder input. Additional information, including application materials, is available. Nominations must be submitted by Friday, Sept. 27.

Phillip Grady, administrator of Shriners Hospital for Children in St. Louis since April 2018, accepted the role of vice president, hospital operations, at the Shriners Hospital for Children headquarters in Tampa, Fla. The appointment was effective Sept. 1. Mark Venable, director of human resources, will serve as interim administrator until a permanent replacement is named at Shriners Hospital for Children in St. Louis. A list of CEO changes is available online.
