CMS Releases Updated Guidance For Swing-bed Providers

Staff Contact: Sarah Willson

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services recently released updated surveyor guidance for hospitals and critical access hospitals related to long-term care services, otherwise known as swing-beds. These changes are the result of updates to LTC facility requirements effective in 2017. Appendix T has been eliminated and regulations for hospitals now are located in Appendix A, under §482.58. For CAHs, the revised regulations are located in Appendix W at §485.645. The CAH Survey Module was significantly revised as well. MHA has developed a separate document to help guide members through the swing-bed survey changes.
