Quality and Population Health

Trajectories: ED Utilization Right Care. Right Place. Right Time.

Staff Contact: Alison Williams

The December 2017 issue of Trajectories focuses on emergency department utilization. EDs have evolved to become a major primary source of medical care in the U.S., essentially serving as the ultimate safety net for vulnerable populations.
Trajectories - Dec. 2017
Hospital EDs face the concurrent challenge of reducing wait time to see a provider and reducing holding time prior to transfer. These pressures are occurring at the same time as ED patient volume has reached historically high rates. ED visits increased 15 percent from 2006 to 2014. During that time, ED visits for actual injuries decreased by 13 percent, while ED visits for mental health and substance abuse increased by 44 percent.
