Ice Cream Carts Program Earns Award For Excellence

November 6, 2017
A volunteer-driven idea to establish an ice cream cart to deliver treats to nursing home residents has earned the Award for Excellence from the Midwest Association for Healthcare Volunteer Resource Professionals. The award was presented on Thursday, Nov. 2, during an awards luncheon at the Missouri Hospital Association’s 95th Annual Convention & Trade Show in Osage Beach, Mo.

Citizens Memorial Hospital in Bolivar, Mo., includes six long-term care facilities with 600 residents. One of the challenges for long-term care residents is that they often lose their appetite, and as a result, lose weight. A volunteer who desired to be the “ice cream man” for one of CMH’s facilities developed the ice cream cart concept.

“This program is special because it was a volunteer-generated idea that brings joy to our long-term care residents,” said Jean Morrow, Project Liaison and Director of Volunteers at Citizens Memorial Hospital. “And it has been such a success that we now have six carts and have 30 trained volunteer ice cream deliverers.”
