Organizations Release New Playbook On Antibiotic Stewardship
Staff Contacts: Sarah Willson or Leslie Porth
The development of antibiotic stewardship programs is a growing trend in U.S. hospitals. The development of such programs has been driven by the increasing number of antibiotic resistant strains of organisms making treatment more complex and costly. Today, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Quality Forum and the Hospital Corporation of America, in collaboration with more than 25 professional societies and national stakeholders, released a practical guide to help hospital leaders improve antibiotic use in their facilities. The “Antibiotic Stewardship in Acute Care: A Practical Playbook,” is based on CDC’s Core Elements of Hospital Antibiotic Stewardship Programs and will help hospitals and health systems create and strengthen antibiotic stewardship programs.

CMS Selects Targeted Hospitals For IQR Program Validation
Staff Contact: Sherry Buschjost
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has selected its targeted sample of 200 hospitals for validation of chart-abstracted and health care-associated infection measures for the fiscal year 2018 annual payment update determination. The quarters included in FY 2018 inpatient validation are third quarter 2015, fourth quarter 2015, first quarter 2016 and second quarter 2016. CMS targeted hospitals based on their:
- failure to meet validation requirements in FY 2017;
- lower bound confidence interval less than or equal to 75 percent in FY 2017;
- failure to report at least half of the HAI events detected during FY 2017 to National Healthcare Safety Network;
- rapidly changing data patterns;
- abnormal or conflicting data patterns;
- submission of data to NHSN after the IQR submission deadline; and/or
- not having been validated in the previous three years.
An updated list of the selected hospitals is available on QualityNet. Validation resources also are available. Questions regarding the Hospital IQR Program or the inpatient data validation provider selection may be submitted through the Q&A tool.
