The behavioral health workforce is one of the fastest growing workforces in the country. Employment projections for 2020, based on the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, forecast a rise in employment for substance abuse and mental health counselors with a 36.3 percent increase from 2010 to 2020 — greater than the 11 percent projected average for all occupations. This is based on an expected increase in insurance coverage for mental health and substance abuse services brought about by the passage of health reform and parity legislation, and the rising rate of military veterans seeking behavioral health services. Serious workforce shortages exist for these types of health professionals throughout Missouri.
This conference will focus on addressing the challenges of workforce shortages, retaining colleagues, creating a culture of resilience, engaging the workforce in quality improvement and addressing workplace safety. Participants will hear from state and national experts, and experience an environment of learning that applies to everyone from the bedside to the executive office.

This presentation will explore what it means for an organization or community to be trauma informed. Trauma-informed care is not a program or service, but rather a culture which realizes the widespread impact of trauma and understands potential paths for recovery. Learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of trauma in clients, families, staff and others involved with the system and how to integrate trauma into policies, procedures and practices. The MO Model: A Development Approach to Trauma Informed will be reviewed, and examples of work being done in the state will be shared.

During this session, a DHSS surveyor will describe the causes of the most frequently cited tags and how to reduce and resolve immediate jeopardy and condition-level citations. The surveyor also will provide guidance on abuse and neglect, and adverse event reporting.

During this session, participants will engage in a review of mandated quality metrics to be submitted to CMS. Practical approaches to leading a quality initiative will be discussed. In addition, three Missouri mental health providers will highlight a quality-improvement initiative within their facility discussing their journey, outcomes and learned experiences.

State and national facts about the opioids addiction and overdose epidemic will be discussed. Opioids are a class of drugs that include heroin, as well as legal prescription pain relievers. An estimated 23 percent of individuals who use heroin develop an opioid addiction. Drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental death in the U.S.

Ty Moeder will explain the difference between civil disorder, civil disobedience, civil unrest and the role of incident command during a civil unrest.
