Purpose

Dedicated and competent nurse preceptors are vital to the success of our health care organizations and to the retention of nurses in the nursing profession. Our mission is to take a proactive approach in the education and support of nurse preceptors.

The Missouri Nurse Preceptor Academy is a training program for hospital registered nurses serving as preceptors to newly hired nurses. Every new nurse deserves a dedicated and competent preceptor to support their orientation experience. As a preceptor, you can make the difference.

Objectives

At the conclusion of the program, participants will be able to:

  • describe essential preceptor knowledge and skills

Faculty

An instructor at the University of Missouri-Columbia Sinclair School of Nursing, Ardith Harmon, MSN, R.N., specializes in undergraduate pediatric nursing. After earning her bachelor’s degree from MU in 2003, Harmon worked as a staff nurse at University Hospitals and Clinics in Columbia. In 2006, she completed a master’s degree, focusing on school-based prevention programs for overweight children. During her master’s studies, Harmon participated in a nursing fellows program between Sinclair and Columbia Public Schools. Her responsibilities included communicable disease prevention and reporting and serving as a preceptor for graduate and undergraduate nursing students.

Cheryle M. Kelly, MSN, R.N., is the director of intensive care and telemetry units at SSM St. Joseph Hospital West in Lake St. Louis, Mo. Kelly also serves as a clinical instructor for critical care areas and NCLEX review and has been an adjunct faculty member at the University of Missouri-Columbia Sinclair School of Nursing since 2001. Previously, she was the administrator of a long-term care facility in Jefferson City and also worked as an intensive care nurse and supervisor at St. Mary’s Health Center in Jefferson City for 18 years. During that time, she was responsible for staff development and education, including the hospital’s graduate nurse internship program.

Kristine Hart L’Ecuyer, MSN, R.N., CCNS, is an associate professor and coordinator of continuing nursing education at Saint Louis University School of Nursing. Her teaching responsibilities include pathophysiology for master’s students, a critical care elective for senior undergraduate nursing students and supervising senior nursing students completing their comprehensive nursing practicum with hospital preceptors. Working with Saint Louis University Hospital, L’Ecuyer helped develop a nurse preceptor education program. Her clinical background includes critical care nursing of thoracic and cardiothoracic patients, including heart and lung transplant recipients. L’Ecuyer also has written several chapters on health and wellness for nursing textbooks, including “Fundamentals in Nursing and Basic Nursing,” as well as chapters on fluid and electrolytes and cardiovascular assessment.

During the past 40 years, Joetta Strassner, MSN, R.N., has split her career path between working as an educator and as a clinician specializing in emergency care. Currently, she is an associate professor of nursing at St. Charles Community College in St. Peters, Mo., where she teaches medical surgical nursing theory, clinical and laboratory courses. She also is an adjunct nursing faculty member at Webster University in Webster Groves, Mo., where she provides classroom and clinical instruction for students in the BSN completion program.
