Revised Medicare Conditions of Participation — Acute Care Hospitals

The Nov. 27, 2006, Federal Register contained revisions to four Medicare Conditions of Participation for acute care hospitals.

  • history and physicals
  • verbal orders
  • medication storage
  • post-anesthesia evaluation

Although many of these changes already had been implemented through revisions made to the interpretive guidelines for the CoPs, they are now incorporated into the regulations. In addition, some of the changes do not represent a change in hospital operations because state licensing regulations already had a similar requirement. To clarify the changes and identify new requirements for acute care hospitals, MHA has created a chart (updated 8/9/07) with the previous CoP language, new CoP language, corresponding state hospital regulations and The Joint Commission's standards.

Please note that the effective date for these CoP revisions is Jan. 26, 2007, and these changes do not apply to critical access hospitals. If you have any questions, please contact Sharon Burnett at 573/893-3700, ext. 1304 or sburnett@mail.mhanet.com.
