Purpose

Nurses who provide direct patient care often encounter individuals who have substance abuse or mental health issues. Unfortunately, nonpsych nurses are not always trained to appropriately treat and refer these patients.

During this session, participants will learn how to communicate and interact with behavioral health patients. This training will be especially helpful for clinical staff who do not have access to behavioral health care in their communities.

Objectives

At the conclusion of the program, participants will be able to:

  • describe the symptoms and diagnosis of substance abuse
  • describe the symptoms and diagnosis of mental illness
  • describe how to detect, diagnose, monitor and refer a dual diagnosis patient
