Critical Access Hospitals in Missouri
Rural communities face ongoing challenges trying to
stabilize local delivery systems and maintain adequate access to high-quality
health services. A hospital closure can result in a community losing the services
of physicians and other health care personnel. In turn, the loss of skilled health
care professionals can limit access to basic primary, urgent and emergency care
services. To minimize these occurrences, the Balanced Budget Act of 1997 authorized
the creation of the critical access hospital program. Critical
